EA BF2 patch 1.3 or how to screw up a game.

Wow everytime I think EA hits a new low they go lower.

This is an example for ALL game devlopers big and small. Never put
out an untested patch.

They have a 1.3 and it's HORRIBLE. Not only do must people crash but the bug
list is huge.

I don't get it... I guess if your super big company you can survive putting out bad
patches over and over. They ruined Earth and Beyond this way...

By they time EA had finished nerfing Earth and Beyond it was a dumbed down
game where your gun was shooting pumpkins and did hardly any damage.

Sometimes I wonder... who is making a mgmt decision on this? A suit or a developer?

I uninstalled BF2 last night from my computer. Doubt I'll ever re-load it.

A little update....

EA rolled there servers back to 1.22 they have no offical ranked 1.3's running at this moment.

There are at least 1000 documented users that crash to desktop. I checked all the major forums for BF2.

Couple had like 500 + posts of crashes.

EA is promoting a new expansion pack Armored Fury for 6 6 2006 release.

This is a case.. in my opinion. Of someone in mgmt forcing a release...

EA told me I needed to "flush" alternate rank from hosts file... HUH?

When I asked What that meant no reponse...

My IP hosts file was clean... WTF Do they mean? How stupid of a patch fix is that?

Hmm...
I dont really get what your saying.

since version 1 the game is in debug mode, not just the exe but all related executables (dll yadayada)
its a piece of crap.

I dont think there has been a version that does not send me to the desktop periodically.

I tried playing the game at first for a while with win2k on a fast box with only 1 gig ram.
1 mission was good second was lagged after that it just got worse and worse.

I started watching the task manager while playing on my second monitor, and Ouch!!
by the time I get to the third mission the game's allocated memory is pushing Real close to 1 gig.
so therefore with only 1 gig of ram i was swapping like mad.
..
the fix?
buy more memory, I bought 2 more gigs bringing it to three.
now the game allocated more than 1 gig after a few rounds but its all good I have plenty.

WTF???
howcome mission 1 can play with less than 500 mb allocated, yet the third mission is using close to 1 gig?

rofl.. we dont need the answer to that one. prolly related to the game being in debug mode.

this is the LAST game I purchase from EA.

I only bought it to play with some friends who liked it.
now they dont play no more pissed em off too much rofl...
so now I am back to playing Americas Army.

which is a whole nother story that has me pissed :)
but its still a Much better game.
just lacking vehicles and proper usage of squad base teams.

I do have 1.3 installed and other than the crash after changing video settings.
and the periodic desktop display trick it does it seems ok.

Edit:
ps I refuse to buy any of thier expansion pack shit..
its crap selling better weapons than the original trying to force everyone to pay for thier updates.

I have to say I picked this game up to see what all the fuss was about and get some research in and I am not too impressed by the overall product that EA has released for this game, not by a long shot.

The game is moderately enjoyable, depending on the map, but its biggest problem IMHO is that its so slow. Menus take forever to load (even with removing the movies that it loads in the background), missions are slow to load, the UI is average at best (when it works), key binding is a joke, authentication is slow, loads of gameplay inconsistencies that break the suspension of disbeif, unbalanced gameplay that has been further made worse by hacks and exploits that have allowed players to get access to all the cool equipment, the graphics are actually pretty average (high poly counts and a nice colour palette, but most of the art looks the same for all the factions and theres no such thing as dynamic lighting or lighting period) and the list goes on and on (see above posts).

I am totally floored that this is an acceptable product that the mass market thinks is wonderful when if any of us made a game like this with the same problems we would get bitch slapped around and sent packing for making a wildy inferior game (in fact one of the biggest complaints about Lore was that it took too long to load, yet IMHo BF2 is a lot longer and not that much more impressive).

It's a decent game, but way too laggy for my tastes. It takes longer to load than the UrU Prologue ;)

I can play again! Had to delete and reinstall and repatch at 1.22.

What's good about this game is that it's fast and easy gameplay and has built in ladder for ranks.

So I think the gameplay attracts people not just the fit and finish.

I think a studio named DICE is really the ones at work here not EA.

As much as I enjoyed BF2, it's long loading times and horribly broken patch system turned me off playing the game. So these days, I'm back to playing Halo CTF on the PC, which is now horribly broken with the map MOD's that are used now. But atleast it only takes a minute to load.

I really enjoy the game, however I've not played it much since the special forces expansion came out (which I've no intention to get). Gameplay wise I quite enjoy it especially playing in squads with a few mates.

As Logan points out though, it has some serious shortcomings which do limit the time I play the game, load time is totally ridiculous (I prefer to fire up Q4 for a quick 30mins to an hour play than BF2), not only does it take forever to load the main menu, but joining a game takes forever as well.

Key binding is a complete joke, the interface is almost unusable imo, if I ever lost my backup config files I doubt I'd install the game again. The effort to get it up and running compared to the time spent playing now isn't worth it.

It's fortunate that the gameplay itself is something I really enjoy but it's still hard to justify sitting through the long load times.
