Milkshape???

Is Milkshape used just to make characters or can I use it to make interiors as well? I need to buy a modeling tool to use with Torque and the new book refers to MilkShape. The cost is silly, only $25. The other modeler I looked at was sick expensive and was too powerful for my needs.
So, Can I survive off of Milkshape? Especially, (if I ever learn enough to make my own game) since I intend on buying most of the art, but will need someting to make simple stuff like small shacks, crates, maybe a few large interiors, large but basic, simple rectangular halls and what not.

Roto and Tim: there are some legality issues with using Hammer for a commercial TGE project, but in my not-even-slightly humble opinion it's the least of your worries. Read down for ten people loudly disagreeing with me.

Oh great, I can just hear the "Hammer isn't legal for TGE use" fanboys getting ready to completely take over this thread.Roto and Tim: there are some legality issues with using Hammer for a commercial TGE project, but in my not-even-slightly humble opinion it's the least of your worries. I like Hammer. I'm using it and it IS legal to use. Though I respect the opinions of people who wish to be cautious.

I have WED (Game Studio was the first engine I studied) and am pretty good with it. How can I turn a WED file into a dif?

Save your world in WED as a map file. Then run map2diff, check my original post above for the link. It's a cmd line app so you will have to run it in a dos window.

There are several map editors that can be used for this, some free & some cost money. Quark and Hammer would be the two most popular free editors.
Here's a listing of the most commonly used map editors:
Quark
Hammer
3D GameStudio WED
Cartography Shop
3D World Studio
Torque Constructor
Quark
- Free to download and use
- Poor interface and quirky behaviour
Hammer
- Free to download and use
- Nice interface & easy to use
3D Game Studio Wed
- $49
- Nice to use and creates a diff friendly map file
Cartography Shop
- $64.99
- Nice to use & easy to learn
3D World Studio
- $79.95
- Nicer to use & easier to learn
Torque Constructor
- $65
- Not yet available
Dif files are stored (with their textures) in the data/interiors folder. You can drop them into your game with the mission editor (F11).
You can download map2diff here
All other objects such as player, weapons, crates, trees etc can be made using milkshape. So yes, you can survive off of Milkshape - many people here do. You should download the dtsplus exporter for milkshape though, it's very good. The native dts exporter that comes with milkshape is weak in comparison.
