Torque for Wii?

by Andreas Gastl · in General Discussion · 05/13/2006 (6:56 am) · 18 replies

Hi there!

I wantet to know, if there is a slight chance that TORQUE will be available for "Wii" anytime soon?
With the Virtual Console backing us i guess it's our turn to use the Remote-Controller in a
proper way. By the way... If a Torque Wii is coming, i would wish, that there's a seperate
Controller-Kit includet, because i think it's hard to handle sensitivity and alikes well...

What are your thoughts?

According to what a number of GG staff members were saying back when the wii-mote was first revealed, I'd say its a strong possibility.

Also, the dev-kits are supposed to be really well-priced I think... to the point of being well within Indie-studio ranges.

Hi Jonathan.

Do you have a link for the GG Statements?

According to wikipedia, the Wii dev kit costs a mere $2000 - what a steal!

I very much and truly hope the rumours of Nintendo going indie friendly will materialize - until then its just high hopes and vapour.

After E3, I'm most definitely not going to get PS3, but a Wii. 360 games seem to be mostly just FPS games, and those dont turn me on anymore.

Did you notice the smile on peoples faces when they played tennis using the Wii controllers? Cant wait for ingenious games using that thingie :-D

Yeah, the "Wii" appealed to all E3 attendees! Did you guys see the waiting-line for the system? No?
Then check THIS out...

This console will make a major splash, similar to the DS.
We would love to provide some content, so PLEASE, GARAGE GAMES...!!!

There was a good article about it (wii) in time magazine, nintendo haven't been 'on top' for quite some time - it would ne nice to see them there again.

Well keep in mind, though they say they will offer a portal for indepedant games over online service, it has a VERY limited harddrive space, in the form of flash memory, right now (a mere 512 mb), so doing anything but small arcadey games over that seems unlikely at the time. It does say it's upgradeable with SD memory cards though, and those are being sold at up to 4 gigs right now, so it is feasable it could hold a fair amount of space for lower fi, but still modern games, like something around single CD sized.

@Paul Delia:

You'll be suprised at how much game you can crunch into 512 megabytes.

Venture Africa on the Wii could be fun, and it's nice and small so it could fit easily.

Satoru Iwata statet, that EVERY storage medium can be connected by USB! So theoretically you can connect a harddrive to your Wii.

Well in reviewing the next gen of consoles
Ive seen where PS3 claims that you can use your PSP
as a side view mirror in racing games for example
$300 for a side view mirror??

Nintendo always was good at bringing a good title
selection to thier console products making it popular

but with Wii this steps into new ground
once Head to Head capabilities are developed
kids will finally get to play with thier Wii-Wii's
without feeling any guilt afterwards

It's the same modified version of OpenGL the GameCube used, yes.

Also I totally forgot about the USB slots, and that's a great idea! You can get plenty of storage space on a cheap USB harddrive, and as a way better deal than what they charge for the premium versions of the other consoles.

ThinkTanks was under 10MB in the shipping version.. you can make a game 5 times as large and still be under 50MB.. I think the smaller sizes works to the advantage of Indies, as we have gotten better than the 'big boys' at providing a great play experience quickly, and optimizing the size of our assets through creative re-use and just being frugal. The possibility of more procedural content also makes it possible to get more bang for the buck.

If you can keep the games under 50MB.. a person could have up to ten games on their system at any one time before they have to get rid of some.

Some audience expectation adjustment might be in order.. but XBOX Live Arcade has shown that people are more than willing to plunk down $10 for a good game that is fun, and while it might not be as large as a 'big' $60 game, it still provides them something of value at a price point they feel comfortable with.

The Game Indsutry is changing and evolving, and I really like the fact that the buying public is getting more comfortable with buying smaller games.

The production polish still has to be on par with the big titles, but we no longer have to compete with boxed games 'poundage' in order to be perceived as quality.

512 isn't that much still, considering you'll be sharing space with the Virtual Console (N64 games can take up a fair deal of that space), the save data for native system titles, and they talk about being able to download extra content for games like XBL does. Then there's the full demos of games they do on the 360 now and... but anyways... if you can upgrade the storage with a USB harddrive it's fine.

The real point is GG needs to get working on a MBU port for it =P.

I must admit at first glance 512MB doesn't sound like much, but Super Mario 64 shipped on a 8MB cartridge, and while there are bigger N64 games they would be far bigger than any games from previous consoles, you could fit hundreds of SNES games in 512MB and still have room for five copies of Thinktanks :)

I'm excited about Nintendo Wii... For once in my lifetime, I think I'm putting Sony in the corner.

We all know how popular DDR was, now Nintendo Wii is using this formula and it's going to blow people away, and it will be alot of fun.

I can picture Nintendo Wii's being setup for parties amongst youngsters and such, with multiplayer and all. It's just going to be a crap load of fun.
