I don't know if I am getting older... or maturing but I am actually happy to see this. One day I may want to take my little girl to this convention. What is everyones thought on this?

I'll just add one dimension that no one has thought of whatsoever:

E3 is a place where game companies tell their employees to go (well, some do). Any female worker (or male, although he would have a more difficult time proving his case) could kick out a sexual harassment suit easier than you can imagine for being forced to attend something like E3's in the past.

Just curious. Where are the female Torque devs on this issue? So far it seems like only the guys are responding to this. Wierd.

It's not weird. There are very few female game developers and fewer female Torque developers.

The industry puts much of it's energy marketing sex and violence to boys. Boys get interested in games and grow up to be game players, developers, and press. Boys go to E3 and look at boobies. Rinse, repeat.

That's an oversimplification, but that it's somewhat true makes me quite angry.

I happen to work with one of the few female Torque developers. She rocks...

@Stephen Zepp: Good point.

Some girls grow up with it to. *waves*

I cant really inderstand what the problem is with the E3 babes. Its spring, and soon ppl with wear even less on the beach. Would i like to see sexy hunks in minimal dressing? Sure any day. Would it make me buy more games? No way. There is no man sexy enough to make me buy something just for his looks. :)

I do not feel that sex or violence is the real issue with this topic.

The simple fact is the games lack in content
so the vendors feel a need to bait their hooks with a "LURE"

In a huge sea of potential consumers the creators of these games
are going fishing.

A potential buyer is 100 yards away and spots a woman in scant clothing
meanders a little closer for a look and eventually is drawn to the counter.

If the booth is selling a new release of Leisure Suit Larry it may be deemed
as an appropiate style of dress. However most games are just new scenery
and weapon effects with same old kill kill kill format.

Our society has meandered to a place where a 12 year old watching adults
chase each on foot or on motorcycles or in cars airplanes whatever
for the sole activity of beating shooting at and bombing etc is seen as an
acceptable event.
However catching that 12 year old to viewing a sexual act is embarrassing
or uncomfortable event.

I am quite certain that the 12 year old will most likely engage in a sexual act
many times in thier adult life and hopefully never engage in an act of violence.
The simple fact is most parents or guardians do not really feel that the viewing
of a sexual act is HARMFUL to the child rather feel the event is best kept for a time
when the knowledge is more appropriate.

If a 12 year old asks is killing right or wrong we can answer quite confidently.
But on the topic of sex just discussing it can open charges of sexual misconduct
in todays phobic world brought about by so many deviant members of our
societies.

the E3 event is about showing off the NEW techs producing advanced gaming
enviroments. The products are a finished package and the developmental details
are tossed aside and replaced with LURES and slick selling techniques which
in my opinion diminishes the value of the E3 event to that of a flea market.

I just wanted to say i found Chris's though about climbing the local clock tower with a "sniper rifle and a warm fuzzy feeling in your belly" very entertaining.....and i believe what's his name had a hunting rifle....but the only real difference is the intended application.....and that sniper rifles can be loaded with armor piercing rounds :P

and i couldnt resist commenting to William's last sentence.....the event is to show off crap to sell, babes do that better than specs of the development process. Not that the former doesn't help, but a big boobs better attract dudes than do huge billboards with poly counts of models, dev costs and what not.

Perhaps there would be less "deviants" in society if society was willing to talk about and deal with sexual issues in a mature and relistic way? How many people out there are confused or struggling with "sex issues" could be helped if society were understanding and got them help?

Opps, I typed the word sex, I guess that makes me a perv.

So let's talk violence, gore, and blood.

It all comes down to, dare I say it, religious mores. Religion, as a whole, has condoned (at least in the past) killing in the name of (insert deity of choice here) to further the religious leaders goals. How many religions have tried condoning sex in the name of said deity? Can't really think of any. Modern "civilized" societites, all of them, are the direct result of one religion or another (or a mixture) that condoned violence at one time. Therefore, I'd suggest that violence has become ingrained in society(ies) concience as acceptable. Show me one religious "bible" from a major mainstream accepted religion that says to use the act of mating to spread it's message. As an ordained minister I sure can't think of one (remember, I said "modern" civilized society which is what controls most of the worlds population today). Here in lies, unfortunetly, the answer. Violence on a mass scale for religious/political reasons (which are alot of the time the same) begats acceptance of violence by the masses. Same is true with sex.

One last thing, last night I went to a store (part of one of the international chain of stores) and walked through the toy isle with my son. Every toy, EVERY toy, was either military in nature or an out right toy sword, gun, or soldier for ages 3 and up. Sad huh?

Whether we all want to admit it or not we are a product of our society.

We are too concervative...

I'd prefer to see more cute teasing girls then any kind of weapons in games...

How can a cute looking girl hurt anybody?

How can a gun hurt anybody?

;)

The myth of naked body in public was invented by ugly people who have power to protect their ego, the rest you know...

When I see a booth that features barely-clad women splay-legged on the hood of a car, my first thought is that they're trying to distract me from the crappiness of the product by waving boobs in my face. (Well, okay, that's my second thought.)

Yes, sex sells, but lately these booths have started a vicious cycle of trying to out-skank the competition, and I think it reflects poorly on the industry. And I suspect it does little to bridge the gap between the industry and the huge, virtually untapped market of potential female gamers out there.

As much as I enjoy the female form, I'm glad to see the E3 organizers rein in the flesh parade.
