I don't know if I am getting older... or maturing but I am actually happy to see this. One day I may want to take my little girl to this convention. What is everyones thought on this?

Its the same standard that every other business on the planet uses at conventions.

but i don't think the issue can be dismissed as totally not mattering at all,
or not mattering because it's an 18+ venue.
An industry develops an image of itself,
and that reflects on the members of the industry.
Which is us, fellas.
I'm all for having strippers at the after-party or whatever,
but not necessarily taking it off on the convention floor.

People (including woman) often dress up like their favourite game characters OF THEIR OWN FREE WILL and go to various gatherings. Many costumes are far more revealing than those at E3.
It's not "unprofessional" : in fact it's the exact opposite, the professional advertising world has an entire industry field dedicated to "booth stuffers" people whose presence at a trade show booth is simply to attract attention to that booth via various mechanisms (Sex, bizarre clothing, magic acts etc.)
It's not in *any* way related to prostitution or deliberate degradation of the individual. I myself have wandered around in a dumb costume handing out fliers for some stupid company. (Ok, ok, so it was a chicken costume, I don't have the breasts/ass/legs/sex for a bikini.)
It is at least SOME way related to the stuff they are selling, the models dress up in costumes from the games (unlike the car industry, where the relation is "buy this car = sleep with that woman")
I'd much rather kids learn about love/sex before violence. (Actually I *WANT* them to learn about love/sex at the age where it becomes appropriate - I'd rather they NEVER learn about violence, firearms, mass murder etc.. But that's not likely to happen.)
Of course, on the flip side:
The booth babes seem to be aligned along one sex. Of course, I am not at E3, and it could be that the photos I've seen are all taken by horny teenage males and the other 50% of booth babes are guys in chain mail or Masterchief uniforms.
There are plenty of great characters they could choose, the choice seems to be limited to "female:most skin showing" - I'd think that guy from splinter cell hanging from the roof would attract as much if not more interest as "generic half naked female NPC number 3dd"
It's just a cheap misdirection trick, half naked=look=attract attention to my game (and don't notice how crappy it is).
However, remove the booth babes changes nothing here - 15seconds of pre-rendered cut scenes = look = attract attention to my game (and don't notice I don't show any game play which is still crappy)
The entire of E3 is a cheap misdirection trick. Ok maybe not that cheap :)
(Nice "garbage" write-up Anguel :) )

So I dont object to having them there aside from the fact I lose my train of thought while having an important conversation with other developers. Hehe. Actually id be all for having half naked men to counter balance. Itll make everyone happy. Well aside from the male geeks but its about playing to all markets.
Now there are a lot more worse things going on in this industry than people showing a little skin at a tradeshow. If you knew what ive seen behind closed doors at conventions. :) haha! oi. Also what ive been offered (and turned down) by companies trying to hire me. Hehe.
05/11/2006 (6:21 pm)
Well like some people said. Its an 18+ venue. Children wouldnt be at the event itself. So there is no foul there. If they are dressed as characters to promote the game It shouldnt be an issue at all. If they are there just for eye candy well if the booth wants to pay for it ok but it wont help their overall sales as far as their product. It does seem unfair that the smaller developers woudn't be able to afford models, and the crowds would then be attracted to the larger companies booths with the models.

Life's unfair.. then you climb the local clock tower with sniper rifle and a warm fuzzy feeling in your belly
05/11/2006 (6:34 pm)
The smaller developers can't afford the huge staff, can't afford to a huge booth with dozens of high def screens, can't afford to lose a significant portion of their team from the main project working on a E3 demo for 2 months, can't afford more programmers/artists/sound engineers to bring their game up to AAA standards and in a worse case scenario, can't afford to go to E3 at all :)Life's unfair.. then you climb the local clock tower with sniper rifle and a warm fuzzy feeling in your belly

Maybe there should be a booth limit...
Yes, I know that was off-topic, but I just wanted to point people toward Penumbra.
05/11/2006 (6:48 pm)
I've actually stumbled upon a neat little game called Penumbra, done with one programmer and a couple of artists. I'm sure that they'd be worthy of E3 if Sony can give up hogging so much space.Maybe there should be a booth limit...

The thing was, we were a SMALL company, but we were "sponsored" so to speak by our government. The local embassy ran a stand, fairly large, and split it up into 10 or 12 mini stands, basically a desk and some wall space to put posters up on.
The middle of the stand was a coffee area, they also had a meeting room and a couple of embassy staff for translations. Made it all look professional, and all we needed to pay for was food/lodging for whomever manned the stand and I think some shipping cost for display material, the rest was all arranged and paid for by the government
Do they have something similar at E3? Would something like that work? Be a good idea?
I imagine the competition for any "free" spots like that would be fierce, you'd have to have a review of the products and only allow the most finished, or those with the best chance on (but who would decide that?)

I displayed some development at CeBit many years ago. They weren't games but the concept of CeBit was pretty much the same as E3. In case no-one else said it - E3 stictly forbids any visitors under the age of 18 including infants, students, and those with adult supervision...
As others said - it's an industry trade show for people to do buisness at. It's not intended for children, tourists, or the general public...

I really don't object to the booth babes either. I'd rather see a booth babe then thousands of geeky freaky men. I think they add an air of refreshment to a majority male function.
And remeber IT'S ONLY A GAME!!!!
05/11/2006 (7:10 pm)
I dont think there's enough violence in video games. It's getting old running around with a gun shooting things. And lets face it, casting spells is totally gay. Video games don't make people violent, people are violent by nature. I would like to see bleeding cuts, guts hanging out, eyeballs popping out. Why hold back. After all, we are playing a GAME that requires us to kill the enemy in order to advance. Lets really display what it looks like to step on a grenade. If it's too bloody for the kids then dont let them play it.I really don't object to the booth babes either. I'd rather see a booth babe then thousands of geeky freaky men. It's odd that "killing 200 people" in a game isn't seen as bad, but "killing 10 where you can see blood" is and "killing 1 where you can see bone AND blood" is banned
05/11/2006 (7:20 pm)
I can think of several base designs where "it's only a game" steps over any boundaries society would care to set. How about a resource management game set in Germany, say the 1940'sIt's odd that "killing 200 people" in a game isn't seen as bad, but "killing 10 where you can see blood" is and "killing 1 where you can see bone AND blood" is banned

Well, the Chairs bled in Invisible War. It's probably just a Fad for adults that'll pass as quickly as Pokemon did for kids.
My mother had a Masters in Philosophy and didn't give me the standard "Its Rated M" treatment my friends got, I got a more Moral "It's in a game, I know that he understands that so I think that it'd be okay as long as it's not over graphic, because if it's not taught here in the safety of the house it'll be taught shooting up coke in his 20's " thing.
Sorry, Off-topic again...

Booth space is most likely rather spendy. So even if all the larger companies only used a tiny portion of the show chances are theyd let an area go unsold that lower the price. I think areas like Kentia hall should be cheaper but I dont know. I never asked how much we were paying for booth space when I was working for places. One options might be to get a couple indie's together and share a space.
05/11/2006 (7:41 pm)
Actually as an indie you can afford a model. Some models day rates arent that bad. Im hiring some for my personal projects. Or just get friends/girl friends. My friend's wife works as PR for one of the companies. She kepted on getting mistaken for a booth bunny and wed make fun of her. Hehe. Booth space is most likely rather spendy. Oh well... Then I would AT LEAST expect some hot topless chicks at the Playboy:The Mansion booth... and even though it's an old game... they should be there every year then ;-)

I didn't know there's an age restriction to the E3... That just makes it better IMHO.Oh well... Then I would AT LEAST expect some hot topless chicks at the Playboy:The Mansion booth... and even though it's an old game... they should be there every year then ;-)

Sorry a bit random, there's just so many questions!
05/12/2006 (5:32 am)
If booth bunnies = more sales, does that justify their presence? It may be immoral (I don't think so) but it must work, otherwise why would they do it? It's interesting to me that we have many rules to force our society into being 'civilised' and yet if we were truley civilised then why do we need the laws? If there were no rules do you think E3 would be overrun by pornography? And if it was, and it made games/tech sales go up, is that wrong or is that what society wants? Sex sells is just the human condition and legislate as you may, it won't stop boys ogling girls and vice versa.Sorry a bit random, there's just so many questions!
Anguel
He said
"Guns really have a single purpose: killing things, and then there's handguns which really have a single purpose of killing people."
I think it's a bit more like:
"Guns really have a single purpose: killing things, and then there's handguns which really have a single purpose of killing people, without them knowing u had a gun in the first place.....unti'll it's too late that is."
Smaller weapons are easier to carry and hide, that's their point :P
Which makes it all even BETTER, they have no problem with replica weapons at E3, yet they have a problem with 'replica' video game heroines. Why is everyone always geting so upset?
- Also, nudity is apparantly ok in art, but that's all opinion, what if someone believes that any drawing of a generally 'attractive' woman nude is the same as porn? Y not? Their are magazines dedicated to this sort of thing, but no one calls it art.
WHY can't their be nudity in video games, at least to some minor extent, their is plenty in movies, THEY are hailed as art.....Titanic....... remember the scene where what's his name was drawing what's her face naked? If anyone DARED to do that in a videogame, even as a cut-scene, it would probly be slapped with a big FAT AO, and never see the light of EBgames or Wal-Mart's light bulbs.
One can't MENTION the subject of sex in public without getting the evil eye from mothers, but if you mention how someone got ripped apart by a train.......not nearly the same reaction. As long as you don't say he got "laid" beforehand. WHY is it that everyone is so against mere discussion of the subject?
I was with some freinds from my biology class, on a field trip at the Wild Animal Park....we were discussing the Bonobo Chimps....who settle fights with sex, and then make up with MORE sex.....we thought it was kinda funny and were wondering why they do this, until some mother with her child gave us a withering stare.....but WHY?? She had to engage in that activity to GET the kid!! He's going to find out eventually, there's going to be SOME kid at school who's parents told him everything and then he's going to spread it on to the rest of the children at school. Quite likely with many errors, then Timmy is going to have a weird, skewed idea of what sex is.
I believe there need to be SOME limits of course.....i'm just pointing out that no one has drawn a straight line, we don't want to be distracted from the games themselves, but it's not like they're hookers. The booth babes are just that, babes who are at a specific booth. So what if they're just paid models? The point is to add a little color to everything. Even if there is sex at the conference as BurNing said, it's not like it's going on in the middle of the show floor!!!
E3 is a place for developrs to show off their products to consumers, why can't they utilize all 'ass'ets that they would be able to on TV or in magazines?
FINALLY, why does it matter? Minors aren't allowed into the convention anyways.

EDIT: i'm proud to be the one to write all the garbage for u Chris ;p
