The PS/3 press conference

by Daniel Horton · in General Discussion · 05/09/2006 (5:26 am) · 12 replies

I would like to hear everyone's take on this. I've been using the comments section on digg and slashdot to gauge world opinion again, and that simply can't be fair. The games they demo'd look absoultely gorgeous, don't get me wrong, but the last 15 minutes of the event kind of threw everyone for a loop.

1.) $600 for the version with a 60gig HDD, HDMI output, memory card slots, and wireless ($500 for a 20 gig HDD without the other stuff listed above)

2.) the "innovative" new controller (which is clearly an attempt to be the acceptable mainstream variety of the "extremist" Wii controller.)

What do you guys think of this stuff?

Demos are smoke and mirrors. If you are lucky, your shipped game won't be: smoke, mirrors, duct-tape, and paperclips.

There is one way I will pay $600 for that console: Guitar Hero III.

If the guys over at Harmonix are lucky, they'll jump ship after the PS2, and get on the 360. Sony no longer offers any kind of value add. Their product is sub-par, expensive, and late-to-market. They claim to be competing with Xbox Live, but so far, Sony's online services have been limited to The Station, which was horrible. It is entirely possible that they could research, develop, and ship a superior product to Xbox Live in the under-a-year timeframe since they made that announcement, but I won't believe it until I see it. The web integration? Developing a unified leaderboard solution? Testing it? Getting all the launch titles using it? Certification requirements regarding the online solution?

It smells like the next Neo-Geo, to me.

I don't think you'll have to worry about dropping $600 for Guitar Hero III. Activision is buying Red Octane so we'll probably see Guitar Hero go multi-platform by then.

I never bought either of the earlier Playstations . . . and I'm heavily biased toward the XBox line. I really can't imagine ever buying a PS3, at any price.

Was I the only one that felt like I just saw the Colin Powell presentation to the UN on the weapons of mass destruction evidence in Iraq? I saw pretty much nothing that I haven't already seen. I'm not even gonna mention that 'Eight Days'....

I don't know what I was really expecting, since I haven't really been excited about a console since the 16-bit days honestly. I'll be looking at the Nintendo and Microsoft conferences and hopefully I'll see something better.

Sony believes they're invincible and this seems like they're really pushing to test that theory.

@Pat

You are the second person today that I have seen comparing the PS3 to the Neo-Geo. Definately not a good sign for Sony IMHO.

The PS3 will only be good if it actually uses it's immense power, which I think no game ever will. Maybe there's something else they haven't told us yet?

The PS3 is already having problems pressing the cell chip due to the fact that the design of the chip didn't make it to the expectation that they set for it.

I do like Sony but they have a bad habbit of blowing way to much smoke

Sony loosing the exclusive on GTA 4 doesn't help them too much either.

I know that the PS3 is a poweful device, and may dominate the market when prices drop, but not for another two or three years at least.
The Xbox360 is cheaper at the moment, but will date quicker just like the PS2.
