Hexagon 2 is out.

by Joe Bird · in Artist Corner · 04/27/2006 (9:32 pm) · 14 replies

I have been looking into this app for the past month as a tool for Micro-Displacement Modeling (like ZBrush mesh sculpting) and Texture Painting (Like Maxon Bodypaint). Eovia had announced it for $269 but DAZ just bought it out and is selling the app for $1.99 until May for Platinum Members, which is a $29.99 signup. So this app is going for less than $32 for then next few days which is amazing!

Check out the demo videos here:
www.eovia.com/products/hexagon/hexagon2.asp

Being sold here:
www.daz3d.com/shop.php?op=itemdetails&item=4222

I tried the 1.2 demo and it is a powerful modeler and with the exception of the lack of UI customization options I liked it better than Silo 1.4. Looks like it will play well with XSI and could be good for Modelling, Texturing, and creating normal-maps.

"Looks like it will play well with XSI "
Content created wtih Hexagon can be imported in XSI just fine?

"Platinum Members, which is a $29.99 signup"
Yes and $7.95 per month... about $117 for the year
Unless you are not bind to a 12 months contract and you can stop it afte the 1st month.

Or $99,99 for a one year subscription

Still good value if you need all the stuff Daz sells and Hexagon 2 for $1.99

So far I have been told you can cancel the Platinum Membership after 1 month. I really do not need anything from DAZ besides Hexagon 2 because I have XSI, but ZBrush hates me. Plus there is a moneyback gaurantee for membership and software, so if it does not work I can return it. I will be able to test it out this weekend, but the sale ends after Sunday.

It exports .obj, so it should work with XSI. It also renders displacement and normal-maps.

it says:
In the DAZ tradition of giving its customers high quality 3D software at fantastic values, we are now offering the electronic download version (ESD) of Hexagon 2 at the DAZ webstore for the nominal price of US$1.99 for new and current members of the DAZ Platinum Club. This special offer for Hexagon 2 ends May 31, 2006 (23:59:59 EDT), after which the software will be available at the normal retail price of US$269 for the full version or US$119 for the upgrade from Hexagon 1.

"This special offer for Hexagon 2 ends May 31, 2006 "

Just in case... but I hope they do not cut it short.
I think Hexagon 2 works on MACs as well so that could be a great thing for MAC users.

Am I not be able to resist this offer Joe :)
Am I have to get i today :)

As it happens, I'm a PC member at DAZ anyway. I wouldn't normally buy Hexagon, but at $1.99 it's just too good an offer to pass up :)

Yep
I would expect a few bugs though... I think DAZ may have released it just to make existing Hex1.2 and 2-preorders happy.

Can't download it yet... download link is too slow right now...

They said on CGTalk they will add more servers for downloads. Also most of the bugs seem to be with display issues with certain cards so I guess the first thing to setup will be the realtime openGL display settings.

I haven't got to try it yet but I hope the mesh sculpting and texture brush tools work well.

Yeah, I started downloading it at work this afternoon, and when I left, it was running <3kb/sec and had over 40 hours to go.... Fingers crossed it will have finished by the time I get back in on Tuesday.

For any one who is wondering I build a base model in Hexagon2 and put inside Torque, the texture line up perfect.

Did you simply convert to DTS?

Yes I convert to dts. I was very surprise to see the texture align the same as in Hexagon. It turn out pretty good. I am building an Elf in Hexagon. After you understand the way it work, it is real easy.

Nah, makes it too public, or a complete pain to administer the downloads. I restarted the download that night when I got home and it went zooming off, so I think they added more servers.

The initial rush will be over now, so any new downloaders shouldn't have any problems.

I dunno, i think a torrent can work fairly well.

but that aside,
you were lucky, it's stalled for me twice in the last hour or so.
