Which IDE??

by Donald "Yadot" Harris · in General Discussion · 04/20/2006 (2:03 pm) · 13 replies

I am waiting on Sam to work out some stuff with the debuggin' portion of Torqdev and then I looked at a list of issues on Torsion and it seems they are having issues with there IDE and debugging as well.

Q1 does anyone have a eithers of these working correctly to get through a debug?
Q2 is there another solution out there besides these two that have the debugging parts working?

Codeweaver. Hands down.

@Donald - First of all the issues seem really infrequent and in most cases you don't run into them. We've been using Torsion (our product) for our contract work and we've not personally run into any of the reported issues. I'm very glad to see people reporting them... i cannot fix what i don't see.

The problem with debugging in Torsion and TorqueDev is that they rely on the TelnetDebugger code within the Torque engine itself. This is really the first time that code has gotten this much of a workout as before Torsion there was really little use of TorqueScript debugging. So it's gonna take a bit of time before the engine code is solid.... no IDE will change that.

There are a few weird cases that we've addressed and i highly recommend installing this patch. Also i have a new patch in the works now that solves another issue and adds a super freaking cool new feature (which Torsion will have first).

So it's not really TorqueDev or Torsion's fault that debugging has been unstable. You'll just have to be patient as we squash bugs and improve the TelnetDebugger core.

Still you have to admit that everyone can actually be productive debug TorqueScript now... that wasn't the case one year ago before i started working on Torsion and the TelnetDebugger.

Ok I will give this a try and download the parch and torsion. Seeing as how I create 10 bug per 1 line of code i write I should get you a very good test run. Until Sam get it running I guess I am switching...

I was just testing doing some codeweaver debugging today, and it seems that it either no longer works, I couldn't get it to work, or something just wasn't catching through the codeweaver IDE. This use to work with old versions of codeweaver, I know from past experience. The new one-click debugging in codeweaver seems to be the only way to correctly attach to a debug session, and once you do, breakpoints are not stopped at. Manual setup of debugging within codeweaver always returned an error of "could not connect to local application"... or something like that.

This is in regards to codeweaver delta 7.

Don't get me wrong, I like codeweaver, and I had used Torsion in the past, and at the time codeweaver seemed to have more going for it. Recently, codeweaver has seemed to fall into a lull for updates to bug fixes and releases. I am hoping this changes soon, but it has been a month and a half since he last reply on the bug forums...

I didn't really abuse Torsion but so far it has been good to me :)

I never had any trouble with either Torsion or TorqueDev.

TorqueDev was just dog slow with big projects (it should be noted that I haven't tried the latest TorqueDev release) and Torsion will cost money (:

So I'd rather wait until Torsion is finished and buy it then.

According to Torsion, A TorqueScript Development Environment it states:

I can safely say that it won't cost $200 or even $50. But we can make a special $200 price point for you if you like. ;)

So under 50 bucks is a safe bet.

Just to keep everyone up to date with our status on price, as it's been a while since we've talked about it.

At the time of that quote i was planning on self publishing Torsion (man that was a year ago... gotta get this thing done), but now the plan is for GG to be the exclusive publisher. So i have to do the right thing and work with GGs publishing process in which a price will be decided.

I still anticipate it being around the price point of other GG tools and kits (all GG products are extremely reasonably priced), but i cannot in good conscious quote prices to you guys until i know for sure i won't be leading you astray.

So no comment... or when it's done... whatever. =)

GG can Dell setup a direct deposit so I can judut get all your tools? Man that just gave me an idea. GG should setup a subscription service. One monethly price and you get all updates to the tools.
