Normally I wouldn't want to simply second a message, but here it goes:

www.blender3d.org/

I take my iBook with me everywhere, Blender is the first thing I open. I've used it for everything in my open content model library.

Hello Mikey,
A few answers:
1. 3ds files are tricky and not always reliable. Can you get the files in a different format like obj or lwo? I always use another program to translate 3ds files into obj files before importing.
2. Have you downloaded and installed the dts exporter? www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=42274
3. Here's some troubleshooting for the OSX version of the exporter: www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=41187
4. After you get that installed, you can follow our tutorials:

Good luck and have patience. I know from experience that it can work well.

"but i keep trying to import a .3ds file and it says error!"

That's because the importers and exporters are python scripts. Do you have Python 2.3 installed?
