How to make a radio-chatter alike voice?

by Martin Schultz · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 04/10/2006 (4:18 am) · 5 replies

I already searched this site but didn't find anything. Does anyone know how to make this typcial radio-chatter voice type that pilots hear when talking to other pilots? I'd like to know if what the processing steps are - like for example first narrow the audio bandwith, apply filter x, apply filter y etc.

Anyone? :-)
Thanks.

Since I was also interested how to do that, I just tried it and had some success in Audacity like this:

- amplify the signal to the max (allow clipping)
- equalize the signal in a way that everything under 100 Hz and above 1000 Hz is gone, also boost the signal again and peak at around 500, maybe even do this twice

This way you get a nice destroyed sound also a hollow noise in the background.

Yeah I was going to suggest that. Radio (and telephone) sound are typically "tinny" sound because they are all mid range frequencies and have lost bass and treble frequencies. As an aside this is a good way to filter out wind noise when you record dialog in the field.

Also generate some white noise (Generate menu) on a seperate track for added effect :-)

Make sure that the end result doesn't peak over 0.0db's too, so after you've distorted it use the normalize function in Audacity, that way you get the distorted sound without actually distorting your speakers (and damaging them) ^_^.
