First time In Minoins of Mirth (small review)

by Donald "Yadot" Harris · in General Discussion · 03/30/2006 (8:50 am) · 6 replies

So last night I finally downloaded MoM. I was pretty exited to know that this was an indie effort and I really appreciated all the work that went into this now that I will be attempting to make my own game. So first impressions

Menus and Guis
Very easy and intuitive. Everything was right where it needed to be. I didnt check out the online help system rather I did the typical /shout hey how do I....

Graphics
They were ok some extra animation can be added for side steps and jumps.

Fun Factor
Seem to offer the standard thrills of most MMOs I don't think I got deep enough into the game in order to see what makes it different from the rest.

I though it was crazy easy to setup an account. I think all games should be this easy to setup an account. I definetly want to go back and test out other features like character changes with out signing out and other unique abilities. Over all a great experience and its not that costly.

There is a tooltip system, a tutorial in your journal, and an online help system.

There are a number of very good reviews on the web for anyone interested:

Just RPG - 85%

Strategy Informer 8.7

Game Vortex - 85%

Game Plasma 7.8

PC Game Zone - 7.0

Inside Mac Games: 7.5

HiYA Josh,

I just purchased the Premium edition of MoM. My main reason is to see what someone else has done with the Torque engine in creating an RPG, (MMO or not). For an indie effort, I thought you did good. Granted the battle system could have used some more animation, but how am I to know how many artists you got working for you, and how much money you can budget.

Two questions!

1. I only played with the system for a few minutes, so I may have missed it. I created a total of three characters in my party, but only one shown up in the game world. Was this done on purpose or is it a limitation of the Torque engine.

2. Do you offer the source code (either free or for sell) to other gaming houses. Again, my main reason for asking is to get a headstart on programming my own RPG.

1. It was a design decision to go with a single avatar to represent your party. You can specifiy which character represents your party in the settings pane of the character window. As you can multiclass your character, many players just go with a single character... this is how I play the game.

2. I don't really have an answer to this right now. We are not actively licensing the technology. There is always the possibility but it wouldn't be cheap.

Very clean. Can't wait until the next big update. I would like to see some more animations and sound effects

Josh,

Thanks for posting the reviews. There were pretty close to my impressions of MOM when I played it back before its open beta phase. One of my biggest problems was the lack of documentation which is mentioned in a couple of the reviews. Glad to see one of the reviews mentioned the Minions of Mirth Manual. I might have to re-check out he game in its final state with the manual in hand.
