Does TSE Scale *Down*?

Do applications created with TSE require more powerful hardware, on average, than ones created with TGE?
How well does TSE scale down for older hardware?

However, I would not be inclined to purchased the license for TSE unless there was some ability to scale back the components. Most of the features that drive demand for better and better hardware are simply not a priority for me.

I can understand a certain degree of irreversible, forward driven hardware obsolescence. I imagine that the competition for features in these engines is intense and in order to retain and gain new customers, GG has to do this. However, I would not be inclined to purchased the license for TSE unless there was some ability to scale back the components. Just out of curiosity, what would you want to pinch from TSE and port to TGE that's not hardware dependent?

That's not a bad thing or a negative reflection of the engine, the fact is new shader technology requires faster cpu's, more memory and above all a decent video card to run efficiently.
Minimum requirements for TSE as stated on this site are
Windows 2000/XP
Pentium 1 GHz
256 MB RAM
DirectX 9 Compatible 3D Graphics Accelerator - WITH LATEST GRAPHICS DRIVERS
Though, bear in mind these are the bare minimum requirements. I imagine you'd want to run it on a more powerful setup for effecient editing and performance.
TGE on the other hand, with the right tweaking can run on as little as a Pentium III 500, 128 MB RAM and pretty much any OpenGL or DirectX Compatible 3D Graphics Accelerator that's not 1000 years old.
TSE wasn't written with the intention to be scaled down for older hardware and I don't think it fair to expect it. You can't have the best of both worlds, ie an engine which looks mind blowing and that will also run on the old commodore 64 sitting in the garage.
