Oblivion:One Game to Rule them All
by Anton Bursch · in General Discussion · 03/26/2006 (1:28 pm) · 51 replies
I purchased a new computer this last week and it should arrive sometime this week. So, I have been playing Oblivion for the last few hours on my old computer on the lowest graphics settings possible. So, understanding that... I have this to say:
This is THE single BEST game EVER made!!! Hands down. No contest. It is The King.
Not since first playing Unreal all those years ago have I been this blown away by a game.
Anyway, if you have been wondering whether or not to get Oblivion... even on lowest settings it's the most enjoyable game I've played in the last five years.

I've really been enjoying Oblivion too. I don't think I would go as far as to say it's the best game ever (for me), but _definitely_ not a bad game. I'm not really that into RPGs though but got the game on release day due to pushing from some friends. =)

HL2 was awesome!! I was kinda disappointed by the ending... but then I was happier when I found out they are trying to make it an episodic game and the ending was merely a cliffhanger.
@Magnus
I may be biased due to the fact that I love medieval setting stories and this game feels like being in one... but I don't think so. :P

I would have to know which computer RPGs you have played before I would see your point is valid. Have you played the Fallout series, Ultima 7, System Shock 2, Daggerfall?

I'm definitely enjoying Oblivion, something that really can't be said about that many games lately...

I think you missed my point Anton. It's a good game! Not every game you enjoy have to (or can for that matter) be "the best game ever" though. =)I'm definitely enjoying Oblivion, something that really can't be said about that many games lately...

- StarOcean - End of Time
- GTA: SanAndreas
- Gran-Turismo 4
All of which were subsequently listed on G4TV - "Filter's" "Top 10 games you'll never finish"... So i was afraid of getting involved in another RPG I couldn't finsh. When I get through some of the others though I will pick it up!

I remembered why I didn't get Oblivion. I'm already 1/2 into:- StarOcean - End of Time

- Gran-Turismo 4

I'm not saying that Oblivion is the best RPG ever... I'm saying that it's the best game ever. I'm not really a big rpg gamer. I've played most... but I don't like leveling. I like story and characters and environments. I like actual role playing. This game is tops at that. Plus... all around it is the highest quality game that I've ever played.
@Magnus
Oh, I didn't miss your point... I was kidding around. Dry sense of humor. :P
@Steven
That is probably a good idea. :)

Doesn't that kinda contradict itself?

I agree, imo Oblivion is the best game ever made.

Yeah I got Oblibion and with an AMD 2.2, 1 gig of ram and a Geforce 6800 GT I can't run it on the highest settings so.... that means I now need 2 gigs of ram and a Geforce 7900.I agree, imo Oblivion is the best game ever made.

It's not that your differences in opinion warrant such a harsh language. GG forums are not some dark alley where you can spray on walls any dominant thing floating in your mind.

No, but Half-Life 2 was.

Hey it's good that they don't have a swear filter so don't give them a reason to put one on.

I meant to say:
I'm not saying that Oblivion is JUST the best RPG ever... it's the best GAME ever.
Of course, this is just a matter of opinion. The best game ever will be different for different people.

It's the bets game I have played in quite some time, and for an open ended rpg type story driven game, well it puts all the GTA series to shame, with their tedious samey missions. Oblivion is right up there with the best of them. Been at least a couple of years since I played anything near as good. Gothic, fable and Jade Empire were great games, but Oblivion is better :)

Oblivion runs very well on a A64 3000+, 1gb ram and a 128mb 6600GT with almost all the sliders at max, and HDR on.It's the bets game I have played in quite some time, and for an open ended rpg type story driven game, well it puts all the GTA series to shame, with their tedious samey missions. Argh crap - I'm already tempted by just reading the above. I _HATE_ good RPG games, because I end up playing, playing and even more playing while I should really be coding, coding and codingPlanescape Torment!!

I would love to get my hands on oblivion!! Lack of funds stop me from getting a good enough PC to run it well though :( I was hooked on Morrwind and love RPGs.....Oblivion just torments me :P

Oblivion runs on lowest on my my 1300mhz P4 with 768mb ram and an ati9600 and it's still awesome!! After a few minutes you forget that it doesn't look as good as the screenshots you've seen and you're playing a game that still looks better than Morrowind and THEN you remember that when you get a better computer that it IS going to look like the screenshots and... well... you KNOW you're going to play more than once. :)

I second that, for me this is one of the best games I've ever played. I still dont think I've grasped the concept of how many paths are available to go through this game. Runs slow sometimes on my machine though. (Ath63 3400, 1GB Corsair Dual DDR400. 120GB SATA II, Geforce 6600 SE).

I did the same thing last week except with HL2. On the old card the visuals were a bit buggy, and that hurt the "fun value" but with the new hardware it's a great game, I'm having a blast!
Don't know about "best game ever" but i'm still in the first 25% and it's deffinitly in the running!!! And there's so much on the "Game of the Year Edition" discs (counter-strike, source SDK, original half-life ported to SOURCE) it's deffinitly worth the $40.
I'll remember to checkout Oblivion, thanks for the review ;-)
