More bad news for Sony?

To surmise that link: It looks like Sony will lose the patent case for the rumble stuff in their controllers, will have to cough up big time, and may have to take the PS2 off of shop shelves.
Things seem to be going from bad to worse for the company as a whole. Rootkits on their audio CDs, rumours of delays on the PS3 and that the cost will be super high, and now the PS2 might get pulled.

To be honest I don't see the PS3 getting pushed back a REAL bad thing. Deadlines get fudge in our industry all the time. The Rootkit on disc was the only real bad thing to me. The company has plnety of money and pay off anyone trying to sue them. The important thing is that they get the PS3 out at a competitive price. They have a good library being built for it. Which by the way some developers are getting more time in the dev cycle becuase of the push back. If sony can just be at price parity they should not have any real issues.

I don't care about copy protection, I just want to put Linux on it.

I guess someone already cracked the copy protection - before the release.I don't care about copy protection, I just want to put Linux on it.

I don't think that's the case. Another story on Bit-Tech www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/03/14/sony_blu_ray_analogue_image_constraint/

I think Sony have a lot of work to do if they want to worm their way into peoples good books again.
03/15/2006 (12:16 am)
Don't know, but considering they stole someone elses rootkit code (something else they are being sued for) in order to prevent people copying their disks is pretty lame. And considering that all of sony's businesses have been making a loss, including their games division not doing well. Plus the dodgy graffiti ads and suicide ads posted in the subways in the UK.I think Sony have a lot of work to do if they want to worm their way into peoples good books again.

Sony deserve everything they get, all these bad things happening to them should be seen as good things for the rest of us :p It'll kick them into gear and hopefully make them stop being asses.

What's Sony done to you thats so bad? Up to this point, they've been a bit off-trend, but recently they've been coming into line with the whole 'blu-ray' format and the PS3.

i know all you, everything should be free non-business peeps, will freak over that but whatever.
doesnt look so bad for sony especially since you cant find a xbox-360 anywhere even if you wanted to buy one, they definately didnt ship enough, which gives sony plenty of time to work out the kinks on the ps3.
latest news out of japan puts the ps3 out in nov, with an internal hard drive (60gb), and with enough units for everyone, plus the role out of there new online service for the ps3.
if anything microsoft blew it, more anti-trust lawsuits, not enough xboxs on the shelf, and on and on.
No need to just pick on sony they both do ridiculous things all the time.

If you would stop stealing...oh im sorry...backing up there stuff they wouldnt need to try and go through so much trouble to try and protect there stuff.i know all you, everything should be free non-business peeps, will freak over that but whatever.

I suspect that's the reason you're struggling to find 360s in shops as well. They seem to be quite easy to get hold of in my local shops. I've just looked at an online site (who's normally quite good about what is and isn't in stock) and they are also listing 360s as available. Even Amazon are listing them as available.
Latest news actually says that the hard drive might not be included, even though it is going to be required for games. Ofcourse this leads to further rumours of different drive sizes being made available, but it means that Sony have to ship enough drives to go with their consoles. I shouldn't think it'll be a cheap thing to purchase either.

If the DRM on the Sony CDs actually worked properly, and people were informed about it before it was installed onto their PCs, I'm sure there wouldn't have been quite such a big uproar. Calling everyone a thief in order to justify what Sony did just doesn't wash I'm afraid. You really must live on Mars if you think Sony were hard done by with the public reaction to the whole rootkit fiasco.I suspect that's the reason you're struggling to find 360s in shops as well. What CD's do you even buy from Sony/BMG? They don't have any good artist signed to them! And it's in every way but name a separate company to the Playstation dev team!

WOW!!!! You must lead a completely sheltered life. For a complete listing of all Sony music artists from A to Z, Use This Link
Some of the ones I like off the list, and many of them are legends in the music business...
AC/DC
Aerosmith
Alice In Chains
Jeff Beck
Black Sabbath
Blue Oyster Cult
CAKE
Cheap Trick
Chevelle
Alice Cooper
Cypress Hill
Charlie Daniels
The Doobie Brothers
Duran Duran
Bob Dylan
I could name dozens more that I like, and ther are dozens more that I dont like but are HUGE sellers in the industry. And because SONY has so many huge sellers, their rootkits were certainly cause to be alarmed. I also agree that calling everyone thieves is not going to wash away the real issues, and everyone has a right by law to be able to backup their purchased media.

Yes it does.
And SONY will likely have to REPLACE all those units with compliant units. Right now SONY is likely trying to stall the process so those units will no longer be on the shelves when they are ordered to remove and replace them.
It's NOT the controller that's being disputed, it's the technology that controls the controller.

Quote:Even if sony lost and had to stop using the rumble packs in controllers, that does NOT mean PS2's must be pulled from shelves.
Yes it does.
Quote:Those units one the shelves of stores are ALREADY SOLD. Sony sold them to the stores who then resell them to the consumers.

Wow... You have a very different taste in music to myself. All bands I listen to are independantly published or sold online. Cd's are a dying breed, anyway.

its no longer a rumor, im really surprised the sites here havent posted it yet, is was annouced in
japan on the 15th of march.
only thing they left out was how much the unit will cost, still undefined.

I wasn't going to get into this, but some of your info is wrong Martian. Kutaragi said that PS3 games would require a HDD, however, they haven't decided whether it ship with it or not yet. Which would effectively mean that its a very real possibility that in order for a newly bought PS3 to even be functional you must purchase a HDD for it.

Hm, wasn't aware it had been confirmed this morning. I figured that would be the case in the end, of course it being Sony I wasn't ruling out the possiblity of the seperate HDD.
