Wondering about the Torque Builder Engine

by Joel Friesen · in Torque Game Engine · 03/12/2006 (7:00 pm) · 5 replies

Hello, I'm interested in learning game creation, and would like to start out with 2D games, utilizing the Torque Builder Engine. I was wondering if this is a good engine to start game development with. At the moment I would like to only make 2Ds, so is the engine accessible enough, so that someone new to game development would be able to understand it? I know C++ fairly well, but am excited to start games, so I just need to know if this is a good place to start off.

I would highly recomend it. It is a powerful engine and the games you create can be of a higher standard to many other builders (GM for example). Start with TGB if 2D is what you want, can't think of anything better :) Plus, when/if you want to, it makes transition to TGE or TSE easier as they have similar underlining principles.

I'm most concerned about the learning curve- remember, I have no experience with game development, so are there enough tutorials and support to get started with it easily?

What do you want to do?

Art, sound, programming, producer, designer?

There are some excellent tutorials, and since you have programmed before (and in a C-styled language to boot), you should pick up the TorqueScript syntax quickly. The documentation for the various tools should get you up to speed quickly as well. It's a great engine to make the jump into development with.

Youd greatly benefit by learning a little linear algebra as well. makes the learning curve alot easier.
