XBOX/XPK support....

by Dean Rymer · in Torque Game Engine · 04/04/2001 (4:24 pm) · 5 replies

What is the possibility of the GarageGames program becoming connected to the Xbox Independent Developer Program? Granted this would have to be some kind of partnership between MS and Sierra. But, this would be an amazing opportunity for people who want to break into the console industry using a solid engine as their backbone.

Also if a person were to use the V12 engine as a prototype what type of steps would have to be taken beyond the current license agreement with Sierra and GarageGames to get the game published. Sierra is a listed XBOX publisher, obviously there is the approval process with MS etc, but more specifically is that something that Sierra/GarageGames would support if a developer were to use the V12 engine for a XPK Prototype?

Thanks!

We have our hands full with the PC version of the V12 right now. There are many posts in the forums going over the X-Box issues. Bottom line is that I doubt that GG will be much help to indies trying to break into the X-Box market for quite a while.

What are the possibilies of being able to make a prototype using the engine and having Sierra publish the game on the XBOX? Could a group get permission to do something like that from GarageGames so long as they are still a partner? It would seem like so long as everyone get's their piece of the pie and Sierra is the publisher it would work, however I realize there are more legal issues here than I probably see. But, in the end this is a solid engine and in the hands of a savvy group it could work well on a machine like the XBOX.

You can use the V12 for that purpose. Just remember, that any game that gets published with the V12 engine must go through GarageGames.

I will also state that your odds of getting Sierra or anybody to publish an X-Box title are very slim. Much smaller than a PC title. Unless your group has experience, i.e. successful published games on the market, your odds are very low.

X-Box titles have way more risk than PC titles because of the following:

    1. Microsoft must approve the title.
    2. There is an $11 royalty on each CD burned, so the inventory risk is high.
    3. The competition is spending at least $3.5MM per titles. Usually more.

If you still think you can break through the risk and clutter, you can use the V12 as a demo engine. From there, if you get a publisher AND Microsoft approves it, remember that you must give GarageGames its cut or buy the engine outright (not worked out yet, but in a similar price range to other engines such as id and Lithtech.)

This is good. I have no problem paying for the engine.
