Linux Port ?

Hey,
Do you guys plan on having a Linux release for this project? Maybe after Milestone 0 is done? I understand you guys are really busy getting this project off the ground, I just think it would be nice to showcase the project on all the platforms it can run on.

Not until John and Tim and Ryan get the Linux client version of the Torque finaled. Then it is nearly automatic.Jeff Tunnell GG

The linux port is nearly done; all of the major and most of the minor functionality is complete. I expect that we can get Realm Wars up and running on linux very soon. (*I* sure want it; waterworld is starting to drive me bonkers. :)

And that is excellent news on the Linux port front. Excellent!

First, install the realm wars demo under windows. Optionally, copy the entire "RealmWars" folder to your linux system. Build a torque executable (release mode preferred for optimal fragging :) and drop it in to the RealmWars folder, and rename it to "RealmWarsLinux.exe" or whatever you like. Start the new exe and you're done!
I haven't extensively tested it, so please report any problems you have.

Though there is no official linux distribution of realm wars yet, it turns out that it is quite simple to get it running under linux using the windows installer. First, install the realm wars demo under windows. Optionally, copy the entire "RealmWars" folder to your linux system. I was wondering if there were any code changes and if that would work. I was gonna test it till it started segment faulting. Why has linux got to player hate? :)-Tim aka Spock

if it's the same problem than with debian it might be a bug in gcc....

tim, there are no changes in the code as far as i've seen, the torque default binary will work with RealmWars... linux doesnt hate players :)if it's the same problem than with debian it might be a bug in gcc....

Except that the RealmWars network version number is 100 instead of TGE's 1100, so if you don't change that, you wouldn't be able to connect to any RW servers.d

I suspect that there are changes to the C++ code since not all of the huds are drawn.
Is all of the realmwars source code available in the normal cvs repository?

The version number is in game/version.cc on line 11. Change it to 100 and you can query and join the servers.I suspect that there are changes to the C++ code since not all of the huds are drawn.

Perhaps not so much being able to play RW on a linux platform, but being able to set up a dedicated server for it in linux would be awesome.

This is a little off-topic, but it's somewhat relevant. In the Tribes2 community and especially at Sierra they're discussing patching Tribes 2 again. However, if they only spend money on the windows client and server (which they say is all the money they have), then they'll leave the Linux users out in the cold. However, a lot of windows users are saying patch the Linux server and forget about the client.
Anyways, if that would happen, they would make a lot of Linux users unhappy. I for one, would stop running two Linux servers out of spite. I'm not gonna upgrade my servers so that windows players can play on it, but I can't.
I'm just saying, let's not forget the linux gamers. They may be still be a minority, but they are growing. I think the Linux client is just as important as the server.

As for torque, I'll continue to maintain both the client and the server at least on the x86 linux platform. Both are important to me.
Also I'm willing to port other torque engine games to linux for free, as long as there isn't some extraordinary effort required to do it (e.g.: the engine was modified to be very platform specific). In all cases though I'll at least look at the code, and I expect most torque games will be straightforward to port.
But, you're right, we're getting a bit off topic. :) We should have a set of permanent forums for off topic debate: windows vs linux, linux vs linux, software and music piracy, etc. We could call it the "Offtopic" forum. Of course this suggestion is itself off topic. :)

I know about that whole linux tribes 2 debate. I volunteered to maintain it for free but I did get not a response. As for torque, I'll continue to maintain both the client and the server at least on the x86 linux platform. Both are important to me.

I'm happy that you are dedicating yourself to the Linux port. It's also important to me that it works. If you ever need help, I would be glad to provide it. I'm no Linux expert, but I'm very dedicated to it.

You're right John. I'll stay on topic. By the way, i did see your post on that thread. I don't know what they're looking for at Sierra.I'm happy that you are dedicating yourself to the Linux port. RealmWars in Linux
I joined a server and it played fined but there was no chat hud so it must require C++ code changes. Any idea when the code will be available?
