Is there gonna be a t2d book?

by Darren Stuart · in Torque Game Builder · 02/27/2006 (3:32 pm) · 12 replies

Hey guys,

I have not been around for awhile and have lost touch with whats going on with t2d.

I don't know where to start with it now with all the updates.

anyway, there was some talk of a t2d book a while back so is it going to happen?

I could really do with one.

tdn is ok but I like books.

I guess not then.

There can't really ever be a TGB book, because a book breaks the EULA. The "book" as you describe it will be written via TDN. I wouldn't exactly call it a "book", but my intention is to create a collection of NeHe like tutorials that fill this gap.

To get a preview of what I'm doing, take a look at: http://www.garagegames.com/mg/forums/result.thread.php?qt=40719

Yes there can be a book, as there are torque ones for the 3d engine. I have one its pretty good but does not cover the 3d stuff.

I think a book that explained the editors etc would be really good. gg did mention there might be a book but i guess they have forgotten it now.

that link didn't diplay anything for me.

sounds like a good idea though

No, there can't be a book. With TGE, all of the script code can be posted publically. You just can't post any of the engine source code.

This means a TGE book can cover how to do things in script.

With TGB, you cannot post the script or the engine code publically, which means the book is likely to be a little on thin side.

There can be a TGB book as long as it is endorsed by GG an the author has permission to reveal specific inner workings with GG's okay.

But I couldn't go out, write a book and hit Trafford with it and the internal TGB scripts as it would be against my license agreement.

A book would only be good once TGB is out of Early Adopter and has been around in the same form for a year or so. TDN is far and away the best resource for an actively developed and changing product like this. I became an early adopter last summer, and have enjoyed playing with all the cool updates and following the development.

Meh.. there CAN be a book.. just certain things have to happen, such as:

get a stable version of t2d (by stable, i mean not in flux, aka: a RTM version)
figure a way to not render the engine "freeware"

like for example, tgb.net... can be (and probably will be) written in a way to prevent unlicensed usage via assembly signing. So while doing this for tgb (c++) is a bit tougher, it's not imposible. (and this is just one way that would help mitigate the whole piracy issue, there are others)

Piracy will always be a problem, though most of what I hear people say here at GG is pretty level headed... we don't let the threat of piracy limit our creativity :)

Plus, even if someone started writing a book today, it would still be quite a while before you would be able to buy it from Amazon or something. In that time, you could easily use the great docs we have plus TDN to teach yourself T2D. Could even print them out and staple them together to give you that "book" feeling. ;)

So, GG is partnering up with AK Peters and coming out with The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque. Now it's focused on TGE but would it be worth the buy for TGB? And will you guys have copies at GDC?

GPGT is a great book, Edward Maurina the author is very knowledgeable in Torque and I personally would recommend the book to anyone using any of the Torque based engines.

Good enough for me :) Now anyone know about GDC copies?
