War of the Worlds Type Game

Hmmm... I had this idea awhile ago, and I started making it in platformer version, but it got deleted. The idea is, the player picks a world, each world has certain statistics (such as economy, technology, etc.). If you pick a planet with low stats, you can customize it more, so it's for more advanced players. A planet with high stats is more set in stone, and you can only customize it a certain amount. Customizing has to do with things like type of warfare, dominant species, civilization, different branches of technology, etc.

Each server has a predetermined number of planets, each with random stats. Once a player joins a server, he uses that server for a long period of time as he develops his planet and pits it against enemy planets, develops economy with allied planets, creates armies, and colonizes new planets, etc.. The server creators, and the game administrators can go into servers and start things like natural disasters and stuff like that.

Anyway... Any feedback?

Hello,

When I first read the title for your post I thought you wanted to make a video-game adaption to H.G. Wells classic book. Since I read it for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I got really excited about someone making a game about it. Now that I've read the whole post, I see you're wanting to do something different. It took me a couple of seconds to switch gears. :)

Anyway, your idea sounds good. I especially like the customization limits concept. Younger planets would be more free to experiment with their destiny. As a whole, the game sounds like it would have an RTS flavor to it.

BTW, from your profile, it looks like you're new to the community. With that in mind -- Welcome!

Thanks :)

Personally, I haven't read the classic book, but i've seen the new movie, which I heard was totally different. I should read that - sounds like it would make a good game.

You should read the book. The movie was okay and it tried to shoehorn some ideas from the book into the ... I think Steven called it a "plot"... - Sorry I couldn't help myself :) - but the book offers some wondeful opportunities. That said, both the book/film offers some interesting scenarios that you could build a respectible RTS.

You idea is great and sounds very ambitous. How long do you think it will take for you to develop a Demo of it?

I'm just getting the idea out there. I'm working on a different game now, but once I'm done I should try to redo this...

So, this would be like an RTS? If so there is a game like this that came out a few months ago. It's MMO (so it costs monthly), the problem is that there aren't too many people playing so most of the time you watch your transports fly from planet to planet. (Transports are like caravans from RoN)

I do really like the idea for this game though.
