Blender Gone

I just thought I would post this information for those of you who have not heard the news yet...

Quote:From the NaN Blender website:
"The shareholders and directors of NaN Holding BV, owners of Blender, have decided to terminate all activities of NaN Technologies BV and apply for its bankruptcy at the Amsterdam court. It means that effective today, all technology development and website activities around Blender will be frozen."

See, I told you so. That is why we didn't want to support Blender even though it was free. The source was not available.

Yeah, yeah, I realize the source is not available to Milkshape or 3DS Max either. However, one company is so small that I'm not worried about their burn rate and the other, well, you get the point.

Again, I have had several people interested in building an appropriate 3D editor, but none of them have really gained any traction. Come on GG community!

The first thing that came to my mind when I read it on Slashdot was "Jeff Tunnell was right!" so give yourself a modest pat on the back. ;-)

It was hardly a surprise tho.. company that doesnt charge for thier product, spending loads on advertising and development. Sooner or later something has to give! :))

Ah well, never liked it much anyway :)

Perhaps they will open source blender now, although its more likely that it will just get sold.

I thought the exact same thing: "Boy is my face red, Mr. Tunnell was right".

And I really doubt the source will become available, that was basically their only asset. At least the binaries are still available.

If they GPL the Blender source, we're all over it.

It would be really cool if they GPL'ed it. We could strip out all the non-editor stuff (like taht game engine they have), and completely mold it to Torque. mayeb we could even incorporate Torque in it (by that I mean, to be able to see what thins owuld look like in Torque inside the editor).

blender has been for sale for over 6 months now...

the problem was (i think) that they were relying on the sales of blender to just keep going, virtually no sales (at $600 a pop i think?) saw its doom :(

Most of you have forgot more about 3d modeling then I will ever know :) But has anyone checked sourceforge out for open source engine?

I found this one that at least on the surface looks good, I am sure torque models could be written.

Allthough Jeff is always banging the same old drum, it does seem that TGE requires a decent low cost 3d modeler, max is simply to expensive for most, and im not sure how the licence on the student version is affected by producing a commercal product either, and, well milkshape isnt quite versatile enough (imo) to fully support game development.
So that leaves 2 options realy, a) take an open source project and convert for use with TGE, or b) start from scratch and produce a specific TGE 3d modeling program that supports dts and dsq, along with all the bells and whistles.
Option B is probably ideal and probably the most difficult task, but the benefits would be enormous, it would also entice modelers into the community.

Slightly off-topic but:

"However, one company is so small that I'm not worried about their burn rate"

Can someone explain this comment about Milkshape? (in the second post above)

He means that a single-person software company is not going to run out of money and go out of business any time soon. ChumbalumSoft is probably not the Milkshapes guy's only source of income, either. Or is he a student?
