Challenge

I have heard more and more people complaining about the stagnating state of games, yet I see very few people trying to do anything about it. GG is making a good start =) but 3 people can't change the industry. However, there are several thousand GG members, all of whom are creative people. Therefore I put forth this challenge:

What if everyone who visits GG would post just one original game idea? You would have several thousand original game ideas! So, just make something up! Look around the room! Look around as you drive/ride around! Think about what you like to do, what you like to read, what tv shows and movies you like to watch. Think back to when you were a young kid and try to remember those games you used to make up. Think about your fondest memories and dreams. Go crazy, go wild, be silly!

Here are some things to think about while you think up your ideas:
-You don't have to even post a description. A simple title can help to spark other's imgainations far more than an already laid out game. For example: what images does the title "Nose Picker 3D" bring to mind? I'm sure that they are radically different from most other people reading this post =)
-Try to avoid mentioning the name of already existing games. If you liken your game to another you are begining to stray back onto the beaten path.
-Try to avoid games that are described by something like, "It is a cross between StarCraft and Deer Hunter 3D". If you can't describe your game without mentioning a blend of existing games then spell out exactly how this mixture will work.
-Try to avoid describing your game with genres. There is a big difference between saying your game has a first person view and your game is a first person shooter.
-Don't worry about whether or not existing technology will support you game idea. We are talking about ideas not implementation.
-If you want a challenge, try to come up with a hardcore game that doesn't involve violence in any form (not even laser tag or nerf).
-Don't worry about marketability. Who cares if it would sell well. These are just ideas.
-Ask friends and family what game they would want to play. It may not be your idea originally but you can expand on it greatly.

These are just suggestions. Please don't let them hold you back in any way!

Well, have at it! I look forward to seeing what this fine community can come up with!

Well, since Im up I'll post an idea that i've been thinking of. I got this idea from that playstation2 game Lifeline and the really old hacker games. Here goes:

You work as the computer expert of a covert strike team. While the field covert strike team memebers attack targets, you interact with them on your computer console (you see their vital signs, weapon stats and their camera viewpoints on your screen). You provide support to the strike team by doing various things such as:

* hacking into the enemy's security systems to monitor cameras, thus giving you access to where the guards are. Thus you then guide your strike team members around the base. You coordinate them based upon the intel you hack.

* Analysis of enemies during attacks. while the strike team is fighting, you hack to discern the weaknesses or where the strike team should attack the enemy.

* you hack into the mainframes to obtain floorplans files, to track other hackers and stop them. Prevent attacks to your systems..

the missions vary depending on the storyline branching.

Think of all the scifi/anime/action tv shows where they have a computer guy/gal who works with the field agents in real time to provide support and stuff. That's what your gameplay will be based upon.

The game itself is a puzzle based game disguised as an adventure game. some of the missions will be timed and the others will involved coordinating your team members and monitoring their resources and managing/coordinating them accordingly.

Im not sure if this made any sense to anyone but me but i figured i'd post anyway..

This is a great thread with some awesome ideas. Heres mine

------------- TYRE WEAR ------------------------

a mario kart style game

only every player is a tyre

pickups include

- Wheel brace. Fire it on an enemy and they suddenly struggle to move. Havint he same Pump effect as the brace digs into the ground
- Glass shards. Deflates anyone who runs through it. Making there speed terrible and there balance worse.

-Tyre blow. This will completely rip an opponents tyre to shreds. makign them respawn

-Oil Leak. Like glass shards but only makes ure grip loose for a few seconds.

Every Player would start the game as a single wheel.

If you wanted to make it more indepth you could have different types of tyres or treads. Some that have better grip whilst others are faster.

Bike Tyre VS Car Tyre for example. Bike is faster, harder to hit but more easily punctures.

If you could get the tyre physics just right (taking into account tyre deflation/skidding e.t.c ) i reckon this game would be incredibly fun.

I use to love mariokart back in the day (especially on SNES) so i wanna maintain that same fun.

Levels could be a mixture of downhill uphill that affects players speeds.

Some crazy ideas of mine:

Random patterns move rapidly on the screen. If you are good at fps shooters you lose. If you aren't, you win. Multiplayer, with ladders.
Or an ORPG version, where the less time you've spent playing it, the higher your number is.

Or a sports sim where you play the geeky kid who gets picked last. The person you control is considerably worse in speed, strength and coordination than the ai players, and consequently has no real effect on the outcome of the game. Use the power of your mind to try and will yourself to be picked by the winning team, then spend time avoiding the focus of play, and trying to keep warm outdoors.

Or a game based on a film that very few people have seen, and is very hard to understand and has very little point to anyone who hasnt seen the film. Maybe even where the film hasn't been made yet, or you have to play the game to unlock the film.

On a more serious note, maybe a SkoolDaze type game would be cool, but online, without any particular goals, and more detailed, with more stuff to do.

I also like the idea of a hunting game, not involving much fast paced action, just sitting and deciding what to do, and thinking. I was condidering making one where the creatures you were hunting were also hunting you.
I'd also like to make a war sim similar to Delta Force 2, but not so annoying I end up snapping the CD and uninstalling it.

I agree that it's more down to implementation than originality. With a lot of games I like the concept, but when I play I end up compiling a mental list of everything I'd do differently. And graphical detail is meaningless when you can't interact with it in some way, IMHO.

Also 'My Little Pony Hunter 3D' sounds kickass. I'd buy it.

Well, I'm new to Torque and I have brought my project with me. As mentioned way at the beginning of this very old thread, one of the elements that can be lacking in modern games is the lack of focus.

My project is a BattleTech Simulator (I know, not very original). However, it is usually the differences that mean the world to a game. First, I'm actually making a "simulator" which means it will model reality as closely as possible (even a future reality) in regards to folling the role-playing game rules. Second, my focus is on single-player (with a smaller multi-player component).

Life can be viewed as a series of random events. The decisions we make affect the path we take through life. My project is to create a universe (which is already well documented) full of random events. The player will chose their life course (covering over 300 years) and have to live with the decisions they made (until they restart). With a sufficient level of randomness, the game will be replayable for hundreds if not thousands of hours without repetition of the story line.

Most games tend to be linear (or linear with a few side paths that later intersect with the main line). Such a structure perpetuates the "play, win, and move on" mentality.

My plan is to make a game that builds on itself with increased randomness, increased options, and increased detail. Leading to a richer and more involving form of entertainment.

Thanks for reading,
Derk

Contests generate a lot of unique game ideas. The recent ludumdare contest had a bunch of good themes, and Jamul has left the theme list up for reference. I printed this and use it for brainstorming.

Although, personally, I believe innovation is in the execution and the details, not the idea.

*bump* Heh.. Anyways, I know this thread is a little old, but... here's an idea I've had for a while...

You play a 3D game as a blind person. Either the person was born blind / had an accident / or maybe is experiencing something really weird like a nightmare. This is actually not so much a video game as an ... *ahem*... "audio game" ('TM' ... just kidding).

People who play the game are encouraged to turn their monitor off and close their eyes (helps bring about the full effect of the game). There are no game graphics whatsoever. Perhaps a fullscreen window comes up that is completely black.

Anyways, the game universe is represented in 3D, and there are NPCs which have complex dialog. You navigate perhaps using controls similar to a FPS (here's where some sort of force-feedback device would come in handy). You navigate the world only using audio clues (and force feedback, if possible). So imagine walking down a street, hearing footsteps, birds chirping above you, and people talking to the left of you. In front of you, a loud car can be heard.. as you hear the sound get louder, someone screams, "Hey, get the **** out of my way".

Did I mention that the game would require you to use headphones... I realize many people have 3D sound systems, but there would be too much extra room noise to truly immerse yourselves..

Anyways, I would like to hear feedback and any additional ideas...

"Anyways, I would like to hear feedback and any additional ideas..."

I think feedback would ruin the experience. High-pitched squeals are not pleasing to the ear!

Okay..cheesey, I know. :P

I'm not sure how "fun" a game like that could be, but it could make an incredible educational device. Kind of a "walk in another's shoes" experience. I'd see it used by charity organizations to raise awareness (and money) on blindness. Of course, people who ARE in fact blind may think of it totally different. But I think it would be difficult to develop without being blind yourself, or working closely with someone who is.

Something that came up in the car when I was yakking with my work collegue (you know who you are tikka boy).

Brewer Game
You have to brew beer and wine for sale in your pub / wine bar.
You have to set the amount of sugar, type of yeast, temperature, additional chemicals like sodium metabisulphate, yeast nutrient, additional acids etc etc.
You set what happens at different points in time until the wine / beer matures, when it is bottled / barrelled and distributed to the shop.
Once the wine / beer is brewed it is sold in your shop. Wine customers are fussy, but beer customers cause more damage when drunk.
Feedback from customers give you ratings on alchoholic content, taste etc. Im sure there is a good rating system for alcohol somewhere!

Well, I'm still waiting For BF1812 :P (If you don't know what the war of 1812 is it's the one where the US tried to invade Canada, but it backfired on them and Canada took over America for like... 18days until the british brought reinforcements and sent us home)

A Sound driven game. Unique idea. I have a variation on that idea. It might have been done before but.

Instead of a blind person the player will be a sonar operator on an old german style U boat. If you seen the movie Das Boot you know what I am talking about. The player job will be to find ships. either merchent ships to sink or destroyers to avoid. The only tool you is a pair of earphones and a dial that controls a directional underwater microphone. The challege is to determine exactly what the boat is and where is it heading from the sound only. you would be able to see. All you can see though is the inside of the sub.

An even better idea is to have it a team base multiplayer game. where the teams each control a sub out to destroy each other. The people on the sub will do different things. One will be Captain/Pilot, another will be navigator, the sonar operator and engineers.

Another Idea.
www.hovercraft.com/info/images/12t4_1.jpgOne of the original ideas i had was a Hovercraft racing game(Not to be confused with torque's HoverVechicle). That was before i got a look at torque vechile code!!

One of the oldest threads on the garage I think (it's got Jeff talking about V12), but still a valid one for today.

"Promotion".

Your task is to get promoted to managing director. You must complete lots of tasks in order to gain the confidence of your superior and get promoted. i.e.

At the bottom (say 'office assistant', you must complete the filing, fetch coffee's etc. These would be small 'mini' games, in which you have so much time to complete them, and get so many points dependant on your performance. Do really well, and your personal rating goes up, with the chance of promotion. Do really badly and it goes down with the chance of the sack! Say three mini games per day, and your sack / promotion at the end of this.

Each set of mini games would change when you get promoted i.e. Next step: Office Clerk - mini games would be Data entry, sales ledger.

When you get points from playing the mini games, you can spend these on additional items to make tasks easier i.e. As office assistant you could buy a suit, which would make it easier to get promoted. As office clerk, you could buy a calculator which would make it easier to play the sales ledger mini game.

You could even have different promotion routes, with each route selecting a number of games from the mini games pool.

Your goal it to get all the way to the top and become the big boss. Funky music, colourful graphics, and a smattering of humour and models with character would make this a real fun game to play.

A WWII POW game would be cool. Escape from the Nazi PoW camp and get into Allied territory....

Cold Canyon.
Puzzle game. You have to find your way out of the canyon by using rubbish people throw down. It's cold.

Featherdust.
Jump from feather to feather to reach the end of the level. Feathers fall when any weight is placed on them.

Holospiral.
Race your space age machine up the holographic spiral race track.

Hooked on guns
A game about putting hooks on guns. You get paid for how many hooks you put on.

Roasted Mojo.
Dance the night away to funky tunes. Do the right moves to make you hot, but do the wrong ones and your feet catch on fire.

Hotel Circus
Play the greedy business man who has to build a chain of hotels called the circus chain. The bigger the hotel, the stranger the requests from guests. Keep the guests happy to keep the money rolling in.

Corporal Darkness
Standard exploration and shooting game, until you get struck by lightning. Game shifts between normal and inverted monochrome, and the corporal can see dead people.

Sonic Holy Water
Throw holy water as fast as you can. A bit like spear throw with priests.

Alien Rover
Your masters have been captured by evil earthlings, and you have to traverse the earthlings security network to find and free them. Secret garage games offices level.

Orbital Eggs
Throw eggs at planets to try and get them into orbit. Complete the level by getting at least one egg orbiting every planet within the allowed time.

Byzantine Sucka
A history lesson with Mr T.

Radical Bikinis
Oh yeah. There are these bikinis, and they decide that they dont like their day job, so they quit to go surfing. But the grass is always greener, and they run out of money. Help them get back to their day job completing puzzles, and making enough money to buy their air fare home.

Rubber Banana
Race your rubber banana around a fruit filled world looking for banana skin bonuses.

Sign of the Brigade
You have to stop the charging brigade. They will arrive soon. You stop them by building walls, laying mines, placing gun posts, pits etc etc. You have a time limit until the charging brigade appears. Once they are spotted, you must stand and watch to see if your defence are enough to stop the whole brigade. If one man reaches the target and places down the flag (the sign of the brigade) you have lost.

Random Gophers
Gophers appear in random holes and you hit them on the head. Has this been done before? ;)

Mrs. Chrome
Metal Mickeys wife? Interface with different systems in the modern home to complete tasks before Mr Chrome comes home. Sort out problems that Mr Chrome causes to keep him happy. Fail to do that, and Mr Chromes head starts to spin and eventually exploded.

Destitute Commando
About a commando who has serious mood swings. Its more of an exploration into how to deal with psychological issues, rather than twitch ware. Voices tell you to do things, you see imaginary people etc.

Sorcery & Shotguns
Supercharge your shotgun with magical stones. Different combinations of runes give you different magical effects. Magical effects damage creatures in different ways, and also there are puzzles that need solving by putting the right stones in your gun.

Werewolves, Witchcraft and Weapons of Mass Destruction.
Your 300 foot high WMD (werewolf mass destructor) is being built, but the werewolves are trying to stop you. Use witchcraft to kill the werewolves before they stop it being activated.

Drooling Swampfoot
What a top name for a creature. You must race against other biologists to catch the drooling swampfoot before they do. Wacky racing through the swamp, avoiding bogs, swamp gas, willo the wisps etc.

Come on guys, keep this thread alive and post more of your crazy ideas.

@ Craig

Ha ha ha Byzantine sucka. I'd love to make a game where Mr. T teaches history. I think he'd do it to if I offered him a sandwhich. if only his phone was still on.....

heres my shot:

reading rainbow the game.....

lavar burton has finally snapped and hes done teaching kids to read.

You Just Got Dooomed!

A game where the player uses weapons that don't kill thier opponent but make them dance to music. Use the Breakdance bazoooka or the Cha Cha chain gun and watch as your opponents dance themselves to death. All this is done inthe high stakes world of hip hop breakdance fighting arenas. It combines the IN YOUR FACE!! attitude of movies like Breakin, Breakin 2: Electric Bugaloo, Surf NInjas and You Got Served with the action of doom.

Going to New York

A game where the charater has to sing her way to broadway. Each level starts off normally and ends with a large song and dance song numbers. arenas include the drive thru at mcdonalds, the movies, the bus stop and broadway itself.

Project JO

Agent JO (jesse owens) is sent back in time to stop hitler. using his speed, and javalin to stop the nazi opressors. the player will particpate in large battles like the battle of the bulge, stalingrad, kursk and berlin. Jesse Owens is so fast he can be in all theatres of combat at the same time. The Nazis won't know what hit them.

um random titltes

cokehead
basehead
baseballhead

I think its funny how jeff said that he would like to see more games based on world war 2 and vietnam and Desert storm. I wonder how he feels now 4 years and about 100 war titles now. Im with him though I think the Korean War has been forgotten. If it still hasnt been done by the time i'm done with my project I'd like to do a Korean war game. to honor those veterans and for profit....
