What makes people buy crappy games?

by Travis Bolek · in General Discussion · 03/31/2001 (9:23 pm) · 12 replies

One day while working at Wallie World (Wal Mart) one of my co workers saw a Resident Evil game. But it wasn't a good one oh no it was the disgracing Resident Evil Survivor! But I think she thought that the game was the first Resident Evil, but I was trying to convince her out of buying the damned thing! The graphics are choppy muddy, its not scary, the enemies are predictible, it disgraces the RE name, oh its a light gun game with no friggin light gun support! but she ended buying it anyways...sigh i seen this before...and the $10 games don't help much at all. Do people rent games anymore? well its been awhile since i last rented a game. Oh well mainstream is really not well educated in this industry. Sigh i just can't stand seeing companies get money for crappy games, since they'll make more. AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Four words for you:

RISE OF THE ROBOTS

All the hype for a revolting game! Thank God I didn't buy it!

I hate games like that!
LOL!

Sounds like they need a new director.
Someone with an imagination MAYBE?
Hopefully not some old guy who thought Atari was cool and Nintendo is state of the art.
Get a teenager in there and make something kids will like!
Look at us.
In an industry, working for children.
Developing toys more or less...
Oh well, we love it. :)

Hey, Atari was cool...and Nintendo is state of the art!

What's wrong with that?

I know, you're a PS2 owner, aren't you!!!

LOL!

Nah, don't have the money.

I enjoy racing games a lot, say some really neat ones for it, I'd love to get it, but I'm trying to save up for a new computer and a long distance trip (or at least half of one) to the other side of the world that will cost a lot of money.
Why to the other side of the world?
I don't want to be the next victim of Nintendo and the video game industry! They are all killers I tell you! They are responsible for ALL DEATH IN THE WORLD!!
At least some people may think so.
If you've been reading most topics you understand that. :)

A day or two after I said "I couldn't afford it", my brother went out and bought one.

Nice graphics, to say the least...

I think Rise of the Robots was a good example of people buying games based entirely on the way they look. Psygnosis made a living in the late 80's/early 90's by packaging beautiful games, some which featured good gameplay and some which were just awful.

While graphics don't make the game to some of us, they do to a lot of others. And bad graphics can definitely be a turn off to someone who is just hearing about a game.

Not only did Rise of the Robots suck ass...but they went and made a second one!

I think the ironic thing is that companies will dumb down their games in order to sell them to the Wal-Mart crowd. So sometimes the version of the game you get at Wal-Mart is not the full version of the game.

The other thing I always try to remind myself is that all the games have to be is fun. If there is a crowd of people out there that like to play computer solitaire, then it is worth it for a company to make a solitaire game for the market.

But hey, I liked New Coke, so what do I know?

There are reasons why people buy crappy games. They are:

*The people have crappy minds and crappy games are all they can and/or want to relate to. They could care less about advanced games such as Imperium Galactica 2 and would rather play something as crappy as MechCommander.

*The people could care less about more challenging games.

*The people buy them so they can fit in with their "friends", when really those "friends" will just stab them in the back the next day.

*A combination of the above.

I find that the neophyte users will simply buy games because they are inexpensive and/or bunded with other games (and thus appear as though you are getting a deal).

After computer users grow up and gain a few brain cells you can usually account the purchasing of crappy games to the marketing that the publisher puts behind the title. People are sheep and will go in the direction (or this case buy) what magazines and marketing tell them to buy.

Hmm.. I think you are being a bit too cruel for people who buy this kind of games, I mean havent you guys EVER bought a bad game ?

In my opinion the reasons why someone buys a bad game is one of this 3.

1.- They are so excited about playing the game (because is based on a popular license they love, it has been hyped to death, is the sequel of a game they liked or is a kind of game they always have wanted to play) that they dont check the reviews and even if they do read them they believe is "probably not that bad".

2.- There are no other games that offer the same experience and they really want to play that kind of game "is the best Vampire Simulator ever!" (which basically means the other 2 were even worst)

3.- They want to have the whole set! or they want to collect them all! (my brother has the entire star wars PSX game collection, each and everyone of them suck to a different degree but he still buys them all!)

And of course combinations of these reasons.

I will give you a working example:
DBZ is a series with thousands of fans all over the globe, however only bandai has the right to do games about it, and each game sucks even worst than the last. BUT they ARENT other DBZ games! and chances are there will never be! (and the series ARE begging for a cool videogame treatment!) what can a hard core DBZ fan do? buy the games and try to squeeze some fun out of them, thats basically ALL they can do.
(until a better developer comes out, remember the old spiderman games? before neversoft made the 3d version? yuch!)

So as you can clearly see, picking up a bad game hardly has to do with lack of inteligence , it has a lot more to do with hype, questionable ethics by license developers and lack of quality game variety.

Is our job now as game developers to provide quality games that fill the gaps made by bad games and their tormented players (and make a nice buck out of it in the process =) )

Another working example: take a look at DAOC who finally fulfilled Everquest players dreams, by giving them what they want! (without the additional lag and random lock ups) now thats a history of hapiness (for both parties =) )

Those are just my 0.02 monetary units.
