who says that there isn't a God?!
who says that Star Trek is dead?!
who says that the games industry is getting boring?!
I LOVE games!!! The epicenter of creativity and innovation!!! I'll be glad when biotech takes over, for obvious long term health benifits, but for now... games are where IT IS AT!!! Booyaaa baby!!
Star Trek Online is coming and now 2 games by Bethesda!! Star Trek fan's prayers answered... Star Trek is not dead... it's the next great game franchise, baby!!!

Another Star Trek RTS. What's so special, creative, or innovative about this? On top of this, Bethesda has done better in the graphics department in the past. I don't mean to rain on your parade but I just don't get it. The extreme excitment I mean. But I'm not a huge Star Trek fan either. In the end though, I'm happy that you guys are happy. So congrats on ripping apart those worm holes at warp 9 when it's released.-Ajari-

I am saying that games on a whole are creative and innovative. There is some amazing innovation and some amazing creativity in the world... but games seem to be the place where you find the most of both together.
Star Trek was dieing as of this last failed series on TV and the last couple Films. This game being done by Bethesda gives the franchise a new chance to live. And that screenshot isn't as cool as a real shot of outer space... but it is awesome if you know what you are looking at. I am not a fan of Star Trek myself, I like the TV show and the borg movie, but I admit that I am a fan of the potential of Star Trek. I am excited to see what the future of Star Trek is in the Next Gen of games.

I haven't enjoyed an Arena game yet. Perhaps I will enjoy this even though I'm not a bit Trek fan either.

Yeah, the graphics are not that impressive, even I (as a coder with no big art skills) can do the same in a week... :/

Why do you think those graphics are bad? To me, it doesn't look any worse than what's out there today. I'll say that the look is comparable in my opinion to the graphics on the SOE game Star Wars Galaxies (the JTL).

SWG has HORRIBLE graphics by today's standards. It's using 4 year old technology.

I guess it all depends on what you define as good graphics. If your saying that they don't use all the latest and greatest tricks to try and imitate real life, then I guess your correct.

Good graphics = more realism. If I'm looking at a rock and it looks like someone made it, then it's not as good a graphic as another game where the rock looks like a real rock. Is there any other way to define good graphics? Now, obviously you can have really good graphics in a 'cartoon' type game where everything is cartoony, but SWG is not cartoony. When I look at games like WoW, EQ2, Half-Life 2, etc. THOSE are good graphics.

as far as look goes, "eye of the beholder".

SWG is not cartoony, but its not realistic eather.. Its stylised.as far as look goes, "eye of the beholder".

It's still my opinion that the graphics in SWG are good. I'm not saying anything about shaders, ligthing etc.. I just mean the way they look. It's art. You and I can look at the same painting and you'll like it and I'll hate it.Steve

The thing about SWG is that they COULD have built better looking worlds, models, etc. They just didn't. You say it's stylised, but that's not true. They didn't build the worlds like they are now because they wanted to, they did because they didn't have the budget to produce anything better. Had they spent the money, then they could have made it look a lot better. I guarantee you that if/when SWG 2 comes out, the graphics will be a large improvement.

A game like Half-Life 2, I could definately say they are trying to mimic real life. SWG, I'm not so sure.
You have a beef with SOE and the SWG developers by chance :)
Anyway, I still say the graphics of this new Star Trek game are not that bad. I'm also hoping the game plays well, because that coupled with pleasing graphics are what I look for.
I'm a Star Trek fan as well :)

Jonathan, the art direction in SWG may have leaned more towards realism, I couldn't honestly say that because I've never heard one way or the other from SOE.A game like Half-Life 2, I could definately say they are trying to mimic real life. SWG, I'm not so sure.

The lava looks so fake that I couldn't even play on Mustafar without being ripped from the story of the game. I want to emmerse myself in a game, not just play it.

Actually I was a devoted fan for more than 2 years. Longer than any other game I've ever played. Even though I loved SWG, it had horrid graphics. Their engine can't even support better graphics in it's current state. When the latest expansion came out, Trials of Obi Wan, which added the volcano planet Mustafar, I had to turn the graphics DOWN to even see the lava properly, otherwise I could see right through it. The excuse I was given by support was "Your graphics card is too good and Mustafar can't render at such high levels" or some bullshiz like that. The lava looks so fake that I couldn't even play on Mustafar without being ripped from the story of the game. I want to emmerse myself in a game, not just play it.

Google "Eve Online" and tell me I'm silly for making this statment. Eve Online has been out for years now. This new Star Trek game is coming out after the Xbox 360 and Oblivion. There's no excuse as to why this game shouldn't look as good as their last project. Unless of course, they aren't that serious about it.

This Star Trek game, real or cartoony, can be directly compared to Eve Online. When you look at the fact that the USS Enterprise in the pic above has low res, blury textures for the windows/lights, the nebula effects are bland and grainy, and the lasers that the Romulan ship is shooting are dry and less than spectacular, there's no question that the graphics are below average.Google "Eve Online" and tell me I'm silly for making this statment. You said "Their engine can't even support better graphics in it's current state." How do you really know this?
I've read that same engine that is used in EQ2 is the what's being used in SWG. Actually, its an early version of the EQ2 engine is what I believe I've read.
The engine supposedly was designed to be modular (like most new 3d engines it seems these days) so they can upgrade when necessary.
What I'm saying is that just because the graphics don't like they do in Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R etc... doesn't mean the engine isn't capable of the same, just they didn't choose to use it.
I'm definately not defending SOE or anything like that. I was a player of both EQ2 and SWG but left after the recent game changes.

It has normal mapping, bump mapping, lightmapping, per-pixel effects, Bloom, 3D Nebulas... wait... Is that a Constitution? Next to the Defiant? IN BATTLE!! the Constitution is NOT a battle cruiser! It's a Research Vessel!!
Anyway, Why is it being compared to SWG? The texture mapping alonw in that looked horrible, repeated 5 billion times in one square with no vegetation or anisotropy efgfects to cover it. KOTOR looked much beter, and played better.
