MMO or Multi-Player Idea

by Jacob A. Ross · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 01/21/2006 (7:40 am) · 8 replies

Basic overview of the story is you can choose from either being a recently turned vampire or werewolf. You start off as a nuetral character and depending on your choices you can lead to the road between damnation or salvation. Example of a quest or task would be either saving someone from the evil side which would be for salvation or you could be the one the other side is trying to stop because you have to kill or kidnap that person. I am thinking that it might be a MMO or a multi-player game so there can be sections where you can have great battles between good and evil or vampire vs werewolves, or Raids, and of course regular PvP stuff. I also think it opens the idea for other monsterous creatures as well. There would be places where you can travel back to different times. Maybe I have just been watching to many horror movies but I thought I would share.

Wow those of us in the MMO industry have thought of similar ideas(my group are big fans of Underworld so we talk about this everytime a horror vamp/wolf movie comes out), we all loved the idea, but couldnt convince anyone to do it. Its certainly a challenge and more nitchy a game, but it could also be very cool and not have anything to to with elves (thankfully) :)

You could also get very artistic with the look (like the underworld movies), i'd say do it, we are all waiting for a game like this.

a horror MMO game, would certainly be something that hasnt really been done yet, could be cool.

I am starting to work with 3D software but once you know the basics you have to kinda figure out what way you want to go and what to design. Since I took drafting for two years and also help design a building I figured I think I will stay on the architecture side of things. I figured if this idea goes over well I think it will be a hobby project that I will just work at. I have a lot of game ideas but most of them our on a grander scale then this one. I figure what is nice with this project is that you can start off small and just build on it, since it would be constantly evolving but if that foundation was their maybe more people would get on board. Even though it is a horror based idea I want the decesion the player makes to determine how good or evil they really want to be, I think it will add more connection to the player. One of my biggest problems with MMO's is that even though your this big hero or villian depending who you play it just doesn't feel like you really are a really bad person. I think it would be awesome to add questionable task and whether your up to being truly evil. I think that would highten the PvP area because you would know if someone was truly evil. Well anyway like I said, it is a starting thought and way to progress on my architectural modeling.

I've been wanting to do a game based on White Wolf Publishings World of Darkness. Vampires, Werewolves, Mages, Hunters, Mummies, Ghouls, Changelings, Wraiths, etc. etc. I'm actually in negotiations with White Wolf to license Vampire: The Masquerade, their most popular tabletop rp series. We'll see how it goes!

One of my biggest problems with license products is that a lot of the time they put limits to how creative you can go with it. I wish you much luck.

Well I decided that I am going to change things around a bit. Simplify it a little bit more. I don't think people really understand what I truly want out of the game and I also don't have the resources. So I am going to make even more simplified.

Raids & Wars - An overall player versus player, where each player can fight battles between different time periods. Fighting will include all out wars and raids such as capture the compound. It will be either first or third person. One of the difference is that players can be human or they can turn into a creature depending on the creature it will enhance their abilities.

I was thinking about game options for R&W and I have Capture the Compound, Capture the Flag, Wars, and *New Idea* Bounty. Basically one person on each team would be randomly choosen as the bounty and each other side would have to capture the player by killing everyone besides the chosen bounty or by killing the bounty player. I think this would add a flavor of team work into the mix.

Another feature I thought would be kinda cool is you could pick the different locations, Europe, Greece/Rome, Asia, Middle Eastern or you could play each feature on a mass scale by being able to go through all the time periods through time/place transporting.

Wow, that sounds really interesting, but you basically went from MMO type gameplay to FPS varient. I think if you want to make it more simple, start with making it a single player RPG with story. Unless your original intent was to make a mostly action type game. Also, the other person trying to get the rights to White Wolf, I think thats really cool if you want to make single games for each one, because in an MMO setting it wouldnt be as much fun, because in the World of Darkness theres basically a Pecking Order as to whats a greater a game Werewolves hunt vampires, vampires hunt humans and so on like that. I think if you made a game with the options in an MMO setting but it made much more varient and with a new skill type system from White Wolf you would be better off.

Actually it is not a FPS it is a third person however you will be able to go into FP. I simpilfied it by going with more of a capture the flag type setting. Where you have a group of friends or ppl you meet in the online room and duke it out and different types of missions against each other. The reasons it is in third-person is because you can turn into a creature so this opens up different abilities such as speed, high jumping, brute strength, stuff like that. I am working on the European Village setting now, I will post images once I have it up and running. I am also working on Softimage to Blender to Torque Engine converting so far going into blender hasn't been a big problem, I just need to work a little bit on getting it out of Blender with the scripts. I will be keep a blog going until I have the formal website up and then I will move the blog to the official site. I am basically taking on the fun ascpects of the multi-player mode and making a game out of it. Instead of you basic shooters I wanted a game that had more gameplay options. Me personally I can only shoot so many people before I get bored with it.
