Before Purchasing RTS Kit..

by Apparatus · in General Discussion · 01/12/2006 (5:45 am) · 4 replies

I was watching a friend the other day playing WOW, and my mind went rapidly to RTS starter Kit available here for purchase. From the video I downloaded to see what is that Kit all about, I see that the buildings there are raising from the ground and that's it. No building stages, nothing.
Now I don't question the Kit itself and its creators (au contraire..) but I have a question:

is the feature missing from the video or from the kit? if it's not available on the kit, how can we implement it?

I know this is pretty much RTS Owner forums related question but if i don't get an answer I will eventually purchase it and find out.

I am asking because I have loads of low poly props and stuff waiting to become useful. And since an MMO its pretty much a huge (team, time, money, et. etc) task, I was thinking to test my Medievault prototype with the RTS KIT.

thanks in advance

The core functionality is for placing "building" things on the map, and that's what the demo shows. Swapping models based on a level system (which is not included in the core as leveling systems are widely variant between types of RTS games) is not difficult. In fact, I believe that the RTS collaboration mod that Stephen Zepp worked on included a base system to be modified. It has been a while since I've looked there since I wasn't using most of the RTS functionality for my projects.

Correct me if i am wrong: i just make the models and the animations (DTSxDSQ) the rest is code and /or script ? are there any resources you know of (I can search for but i gladly take an advice) for implementing a leveling system?

The mentioned mod has released the collaboration mod to the RTS owning public. It includes several leveling features (and instances of things like harvesting and resource management). It is available on the RTS private forum.

That's really good news. Can't wait to get my new card and fetch the KIT.
