An Interlink exchange Program for TORQUE developers

Back in the modding days I remember being very young and enthusiastic :)...
The one thing I noticed on mod teams was the extraordinary commitment and good quality of work within a very decent timeframe.
How is it possible we have difficulties keeping that strong bond between team members of the same game studio?
This is but one issue game development world is facing today. What makes us better. What helps us most?
Let people hear of us, from us. Let them come to our world. A big world, by the way.
The idea behind this program is fairly simple: i own a website, you own a website; you are a coder I am an artist; we both provide resources for the community. Some of us do it on Garage Games resource page. Some would choose to have a website for that.
So, back to the modding days... I remember websites had a huge list of links on a side, even though they were pretty much competitors in that field..
Why not we start linking each other? I mean, okay, if you post a link to another developer chances are that he will leave your website that direction. But, hey, it works the other way around too.
I don't know about you, but I feel that such thing can only help.
For more info, please drop me a line.

The mod teams had little close to nothing related to Money; yet they had a very "united" - can't find a better word - community.

However, you go to EA Sports or whatever, you don't see a link pointing at 2k Sports. It's really the competition on sales. EA gets NFL rights, 2K says "ohh yea?" and shoves MLB down their throats with their own exclusive rights.
A mod community has very little competition. However you throw in a reward, and then things change.
In a community, the reward is others praising your work. In an industry, the reward is a paycheck.
I choose community anyday.

I know exactly what you mean. Operation Flashpoint's mod community is like a web in itself. I go to one site, I can find every other website there is from there. I go to another, and it's the same thing. However, you go to EA Sports or whatever, you don't see a link pointing at 2k Sports. It's really the competition on sales. To improve the community here at GG, it would be GREAT to have at least one website not only dedicated in Torque sources, but to dedicate itself in harnessing a community. With news on Torque projects, updates, resources, releases, studios, you name it. It should be the main place to showcase everything that has to do with Torque. I think it would be very succesful! There may already be a site like this, I would not be aware of however.

As for your main idea however, I really do like it.To improve the community here at GG, it would be GREAT to have at least one website not only dedicated in Torque sources, but to dedicate itself in harnessing a community. Seems that's what Torque Developer Network is geared toward.

While TDN is more geared towards the inside developers (people who have purchased Torque and are seeking help in development), something similar for a consumer-based group of individuals would, I think be far better. Torque should have a website within itself.

Website within itself? Care to elaborate?

MyDreamRPG.com

I've been doing that for awhile now, altough primarily it's targeted at MMORPG development.MyDreamRPG.com

There is no Torque website, only a Garage Games website

interlink would probably be described as a location on a webpage (like google adwords) where little logos with links are posted. Nothing more.
that's why I mentioned modding community. they used to link each other like this.
I mean, common, if ime at gg website and i am looking for anything else related to Torque where do I go? search? give a links page so i can see what's available out there....

FYI, TDN, once out of beta, will have quite a bit of it's content available to the public. It's currently restricted to licensed owners simply because it is in beta.

Why not just start a webring?

When I hear webring, I think of 20 sites poorly done with the same exact content and popup galore.

I think the idea of a bunch of Torque specific development sites is very good. We want to see TDN grow, but we also want to see an ecosystem of non-GG sites spring up around our technologies as well. If you have a good idea and need help with hosting, etc., just let me know at jefft at garagegames dot com.

Hey guys. GarageGames hosts Devmaster.net on one of our servers. We always have. We also bought the old 3Dengines domain and encouraged Dia to create the 3D engines portion of his site. He did an amazing job implementing eveything on his site, so we are not trying to take too much credit. I just want everybody to understand the kind of things we do behind the scenes to help indie game development and to offer the same kind of help to others that have good ideas.I think the idea of a bunch of Torque specific development sites is very good. If we start having litlle logos pointing to each other's websites it will be a good start. i have a page on my site specially designed for this, called Resources (offline now)..

Who would like to start up a Torque site?
#19
a torque website - even a brief one - would help i suppose.
01/13/2006 (8:29 pm)
I am willing to help. because I too was a newbee in this field and I know how hard it is to search trough a huge community specific issue solutions especially when you are eager to get to work.a torque website - even a brief one - would help i suppose.
