Maya grid disappearing...

Hi folks,

I've had this problem using Maya for some time now and haven't been able to determine what the issue is.

It seems the grid lines disappear after I load a project. I can reset them by deleting my preferences and starting over, but other than that, nothing seems to restore them.

I first started noticing it when I was working through the exercises of "Game Character Development with Maya". I change the units from centimeter to meter and set NTSC 30 and also adjust the grid according to the book. Seems ok at first until I try and load a jpeg or tga file to use as the template.

I did find through Google search someone mentioning a driver problem with ATI. I have an ATI X800XT Platinum.

Anyone have an idea why this is happening? Something to do with a clipping plane maybe?

Well, seems I answered my own question after reading my own post! :) I know, don't laugh ;)

For others with similar problems, I'll fill you in on the fix:

Long story short, I set the camera far clipping plane to a high number. When I modified the grid/units settings I needed to compensate by setting the camera clipping planes.

This is found in Windows>Settings/Preferences>Preferences then in the Categories window clicking on Cameras. You can enter your information there for near and far clipping planes or use the sliders.

I hope this helps someone else.

DtsUtility.mel (part of the Maya2DTS download) has a menu option to reset grids and clipping planes. It'll save you some clicking around. This is also covered in the Maya2DTS documentation.

Ah, thanks Danny. I'm learning a little more about Maya every day.

I just discovered the video tutorial on using the Maya2DTS and your dtsUtility:

I'm sure its around in another forum but I found it by accident.
