ATTN: All KC/ Metro Area Developers

by Kirby Webber · in General Discussion · 01/03/2006 (10:55 am) · 19 replies

I am trying to organize a gathering of independant game developers from the KC/ Metro area.

The purpose of this gathering would be simply as a networking opportunity - a chance for those of us in close geographic proximity to meet face to face.

The idea is to network and provide opportunities for independants in the Metro are to establish working relationships with other developers in the area.

My hope is that some fruitful and potentially profitable relationships might be established that could be mutually beneficial to all parties involved.

If you're an artist looking for a programmer, a programmer looking for an artist, or a "hired gun" of any type and just looking for contract work, this could be a great opportunity... for all of us.

Now, I have NO details worked out, no location planned, no dates, no nothing.

I'm posting this because I'd like to get the ball rolling and get some feedback from those of you who might be interested in attending, like:

--> Where would be a good, central location to host such a gathering. Preferably somewhere we could all meet 'impromptu'. I'm not looking to rent a hall or anything of that sort.

--> WHEN would be a good time? Obviously, most would prefer a weekend day, Saturday or Sunday, but that leaves which day and on what date wide open?

I'd like to get as many of us as absolutely possible. To that end, I've run a pretty extensive search here on GG, and there are more of us than I would have ever guessed - if you're not on the list, but want to be, please post in this thread... I'll be monitoring it for feedback.

~ Cheers

Sounds good. If we're doing this as a biz networking thing, it would seem appropriate to do during a weekday. As far as location, if even half the people on this list appear, we're talking 10 people packed into someone's house. Someone have a big conference room at their office?

Definitely meant as a business networking opportunity - though I was thinking of a casual sort of gathering. (Taking over a restaraunt or a bar and grill somewhere?)

I had suggested weekends because many (including myself) indie's "moonlight" as an indy and work a (non game dev related) day job.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in no matter what. =)

I would definitely be interested in something like this. However, currently my contracting job has me working in Memphis. I do get to fly home to KC every other weekend, so it is not completely out of the question....but I would I have a very limited timeframe. My next weekend home is the weekend of Jan. 14; unless things change I will be home every other weekend hence. Note: It is still undecided as to how long I will be working in Memphis...it could be that I am back in KC for good in Feb or March.

Hey guys, yes there are definitely more of us here than I'd have guessed as well. This sounds like a really nice opportunity to meet some of you in person. I'm free for weeknights and weekends, as I have a non-game dev related day job at the moment.

Robert,

I'm sure we could manage to schedule a weekend when you are home.

Nothing says this has to be done within a given timeframe. If it takes three months to plan a meeting that fits everyone's schedule - so be it.

I'm not in any hurry, but I do want to meet you all, exchange names and numbers and so forth.

Who knows, we could wind up carving out our own little niche in the indy world. =)

Bar and grill sounds very good. I'd recommend one of two places: 54th street bar and grill (they're all over, have different food types, tho may not handle a group this big); Margarita's on Southwest Boulevard downtownish (can handle large headcount, is cheap good Mexican food).

Available all evenings except Wed. I'm one of the few fulltimers apparently.

Three months would be perfect. I'm out of grad school by then. :) One and a half classes left.

I work 4-midnight and I'm off Sunday Monday. So my schedule is really odd. So when a meeting happens I'll try to adjust to whatever is most convenient for the group.

Great info so far.

I'm keeping track of respondants and what times of the week/ timeframes they would be available so we can work something out that fits everyone's schedules. =)

I'm in if it's casual and you don't mind a realitively inexperienced highpoly modeler hanging about.
But I can also understand if you guys are going for a more productive, straightforward event.
Weekends only, preferably a Saturday.

Joseph,

Casual - check. (C;

High-poly modeler... can we say "cut scenes" =P

I'm pretty sure no-one would mind a high poly modeler hanging around. Heck, you might just find yourself some contract work if there are any TSE developers around - those normal maps gotta come from somewhere y'know. =)

Just an update.

So far it appears there are at least 7 of us who are interested in doing this.

We are tentatively looking at Saturday, January 28th as a possible date.

I will post specifics when we have everything finalized - just in case.

I'll also email everyone on the above list so anyone who just hasn't cecked there email in a while still has a chance to go if they want.

Incidentally, a few on that list didn't provide public emails in their profiles. Here's hoping you guys see this:

Eddie Saunders: No email

Master TMO: No email

Kyle Valentine: No email

Cy: No email

Does Wichita count as a KC metro area?

Good Afternoon,

I was wondering if this is an open meeting or if it is by invitation only?

I am interested in attending, and would love to get some information. Please feel free to contact me via the email that I have listed on this site. Thanks a bunch and have a great day!

UPDATE:

First, let me apologize for having dropped the ball.

I had hoped to have put something together right now, but life has a funny way of kicking you in the gonads at the worst possible moment.

Couple real-life struggles with my company suddenyl blocking the GG site and I'm feeling pretty cut off from the community here lately. In truth, I'm feeling cut off at the knees.

It's amazing how little things like just being able to log in and check news can make you feel "connected".

To answer the last two posts ( over a month and a half late =\ ) Wichita most certainly counts. If you're willing to drive the distance, you're more than welcome! =)

Alos, this is most certainly NOT an "invitation only" kind of thing... it's open to anyone and everyone who wishes to do some networking.

With the idea in mind that it's better late than never, I'd still like ot pull this off if everyone is still interested...

The general consensus previsouly (collected via email) was that saturdays looked like the best day of the week for something like this.

I'm currently thinking about April 8th... assuming there's still interest.

April 8 sounds good, any ideas for "where"? There is a place by the raceway that I like called "The Irish Pub".

My email is stujitsu@hotmail.com if you want to get a hold of me directly.

You can get the information here, though I am also emailing you as well.

Hope to see you there. =)
