Omega Drivers giving me BSOD

by Ben Jones · in General Discussion · 12/30/2005 (7:23 pm) · 21 replies

Hey,
A few weeks ago I installed the omega drivers so i could use the TSE without having my computer crash. It worked great for a while. but now my computer is getting a BSOD every 3 or 4 hours. I tried to download hte catalyst drivers but i would always get an error while installing them, so I couldn't install it. I'm using a laptop not a desktop by the way.

I haven't completely confirmed that it is the drivers but I REALLY thing it is.

here are my computer specs:

Windows XP Home Edition
Pentium 4 2.8Ghz
1 GB Ram
ATI Mobility Radeon 9200

Here is the error i get:

When my computer restarts I get sent to here when i send the error to mircosoft:
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=af7c0f4a-d761-4cc8-bb73-b667d9de418c&SID=10

So...

Do I have to reinstall my old Graphics Driver to fix the BSOD? If I have to reinstall the old driver, how would I go about doing that?

Are there any other drivers that will work with TSE and not crash my computer?

Does anyone know when the catalyst drivers are coming out for laptops?

thanks
Ben Jones

Edit: I went to the ATI site and they have a thing for Moblity Catalyst drivers, but i scanned my computer with their little scanning program, and it said i cant use it, is that because i installed the Omega drivers? would reinstalling my old drivers and scanning again make the scan say i can use it?

Ok, so i got BSOD Errors every 20 mins and so i got out the driver CD and reinstalled the old driver, i did some more searching around on the ATI site and it says i need to go to the manufacturer's site. so i go to the Microsoft site and search my model and i find the driver, i installed it and it is a catalyst driver. so i have the most recent version of my driver and i'm not getting BSOD anymore (i hope) and i go to run the TSE demo and it says i need newer drivers. but i have the most recent one.

So... do i just wait for mircosoft to make another update for my driver?

Edit: ok so i got a BSOD a few minutes ago. so its not the graphics driver. I'm testing to see if it's my external wireless antenna, i just got wireless recently and that was when the errors started coming. so im hard wired in with an eithernet cable and im gonna test it out for a few hours to see if i get a BSOD

Hmmm i got some BSOD, so i looked around and the omega drivers were in program files. so i used the uninstaller to get rid of it. now i just gatta wait and see if anything happens.

Random BSOD's are generally caused by overheating and (a *lot* more rare) bad memory.

When I get the BSOD it's mostly when im playing World of Warcraft. I have all the settings turned down in the game, and when it crashes my computer isnt all that hot, its a little warm but nothing really hot. What do you mean by bad memory? like no space on the hard drive? i have like 30 open gigs, and i defragged like a few days ago, thouhg i could probbly do it again. I checked for disk errors a few days ago as well. I'll go through the WoW support page again, see if they can solve my problem.

Ben... when you say "warm", do you mean "to the touch" or are you running a temp monitor?

I used to have an AMD rig that went a little wonky.

Case temp could be around 90f, but processor temp would spike over 130 - keeeRASH!

@Ben: to remove the doubt of overheating, you should move your computer out from under your desk, take the cover off of it, and if you have one, point a fan at it.

if your bsod's magically go away, then they were caused by overheating.

PS: your pci cards should be spaced far enough apart to provide airflow. if you have room in your case, move them to be apart from eachother.

Yep.

Will do.

I'm using a laptop so i dont have any PCI slots for pci cards.

I went to the WoW support site and they had a BSOD section, but none of the errors fit mine. Are there any older Catalsyt drivers that will work with my 9200 mobility radeon and still work with TSE, and that is stable?

later I'm going to see if i can get my older brother's super computer guru friend to look at my computer and see if he can fix it.

If all else fails i might go out and buy myself a new video card with my Xmas money.

Ive been playing WoW for probbly 4 or 5 hours now with a fan, and it seems to be working great. it might be my laptop stand i have that isn't getting it cool enough, but its never done this in the past. maybe when i installed the omega drivers it set to overclock or something, and now it hasnt changed back. so if it is overclocking, how do i change it back?

I'm going to see if i can install a little fan in my stand as well. you know those little summer personal fans take 2 AA batteries? that will be so old school attached to my laptop.

Are you getting airflow coming out of the exhaust vents on your laptop?

Sounds like a fan isn't working somewhere, which would be a relatively easy fix.

@Ben: it is most likely due to overheating as your experiments seem to suggest.

the reason why additional drivers may increase the problem is perhaps your graphics card is now working more efficiently, meaning that it can take better advantage of itself, meaning more heat is generted...

A great solution for you would probably to put your laptop on a metal desk. this will help the laptop transfer it's heat directly to the desk which would act as a big heat sink.

hope that helps,

My laptop tends to overheat from time to time, very simply they have thin metal fins that are perfect lint brushes. About once every 6 months or so I need to take the cover off the laptop and blow the fins clean. Blowing the compressed air from the outside into the PC through the exhaust holes. It's pretty easy to do.

I doubt any fans are broken. 1/2 of them would be sucking in, so it would be hard to tell by puting your finger on it

also, if your computer doesnt think it's too hot, it probably wont turn the fan on max.

looking at your docking station... man, i see that's a big problem. the entire thing looks to be insulated by a plastic mitt.

btw, what kind of laptop do you have? the one in the picture looks to be a dell inspiron 8600

mine doesnt look exactly like that one, its somewhat more open.

HP Pavilion zx5000 notebook, lol i cant believe i forgot to say that on my first post... oops :/

yea, i dont think they are broken either, i think they are probbly just clogged so the fan doesn't turn.

tomorrow im gonna go to bestbuy and have them take a peek at it. when i got my laptop i bought an extended warrenty which will cover this if the fan is broken or if anything got hurt from the heat.

right now im transfering all my files to my external hard drive, just incase it needs to be shipped out or if they screw up.

I've been playing WoW for about 6 hours now without the big fan and i havent had a BSOD, maybe the computer fan got clogged and now its unclogged. I just checked the computer fans, one is sucking in air, and the other is blowing out warm air. :) i think my computer is going to be alright :), but im still gonna continue to play wow for the rest of today without the big fan. (when im talkign abotu the big fan i mean a normal fan that you use to keep yourself cool, not the computer fan.)

Alright, I brought my computer to bestbuy. I figure that going without my own computer for a week is better than chancing it getting fried. They are going to check it out sometime within the next 2 days and then call me back and tell me what is wrong with it. they did discover that i have 63 programs taht startup when my computer starts up. thats probbly not good for it, I was wondering why it was kinda slow when it started up.

Alright guys, so I waited 72 hours before calling. they were supose to call me after 48 but i figured that they were probbly behind, or maybe it was because I came in on a sunday, anyway. I call the geeksquad at the best buy and ask about my computer, and the geek squad girl says that my laptop has 16 viruses.

I was a little stunned. She said that she could remove them, and get all of the most recent updates for my computer for me at the price of 106 dollars to remove them. I asked her about the hardware, and she replied that it was all ok. I puased and waited for a second thinking to myself. 16 viruses... how the heck did i get 16? I have the latest Norton Anti-virus as well as 3 different anti spyware programs, and I scanned the night before I took my laptop to best buy and got a few data miners and a couple of trackers.

I told her no I don't want to pay the 106 dollars to get rid of the viruses (I can always just reformatt if it comes down to it and I've got a good external harddrive and all the installs to my programs). I told her that I'll come down tomorrow to pick up my laptop the next day and I hung up.

I then realized wait, This can't be a virus problem. My computer would run fine with a house fan and would crash without it. There absolutely has to be a problem with the hardware.

I call back and I get a new guy, I told him who I was and that i brought in my laptop. I told him, that the other geek squader told me I have some viruses, but is there something wrong with my fan, he said that my computers heat detector isn't switching on my fan.

I thought to myself "What!?! the other person said that my computer is fine execpt for the viruses, if i had brought that computer home i would have had the same problems and possibly destroied my computer!!"

He asked me if i would like to send it out to be repaired, and I said yes. The repair costs are covered by my warrenty and so now all i have to do is wait 10 to 14 business days for my lappy to return how to me. Then i'll tackle those 16 viruses, which I am willing to bet are all data miners/trackers. 106 dollars... so sad.

Edit: oh, and once i get it back i'm reinstalling hte omega drivers, sorry if i scared anyone from downloading them. they are safe. they wont kill your laptop, and bestbuy's geeksquad is lame :)

Looks like they are taking you for a ride ben...

but ahh well, that's the price you have to pay for not fixing it yourself :)

Those dicks are just money hungry. They probably get paid more, the more they tell you whats supposively wrong with your computer and why it will cost more money than what is REALLY wrong with your computer.

Well now that they had their time with it, it probably is infected with crap.
