New and exciting ways not to be able to log in to TDN

by Orion Elenzil · in Torque Developer Network · 12/30/2005 (3:39 pm) · 9 replies

As per requests,
am restarting this thread this here -

i'm again unable to log in to TDN
but now the result of clicking on the login links (one in the page body, one at upper right) is a very blank page.

the trick of first visiting 'recent changes' and then logging in isn't doing much.

blowing away my GG cookies also didn't help.

i've tried many times, and am giving up.

experienced the same thing yesterday.

firefox 1.5 winXP

Same login problem here, but I haven't tried the mentioned solutions. I'll try those in a minute...

After about 10 times, I got in. I copied and pasted the login link into the address bar, and that did it for me.

Hi Orion!

Just wait about a minute between tries. The login problems that are happening now are all time related so trying a bunch of times in quick succession gets you nowhere. You actually have to wait 60 seconds or so between tries to get different results.

Rick and I will address this as soon as we're both back in the office, shortly after Jan 4.

If you can go 5 minutes without getting in, then contact me as you've found a new bug.

I'm oh-for-seven or so attempts at logging in to TDN over the past 4 days on two seperate computers.

firefox 1.5 winxp

edit:
oh, except just now it worked, of course.
one-for-eight then.

Well most of the problems I get are timeouts, which I then go back and refresh the page, and it's cool. This is in Firefox 1.5.

Your login problems can be linked to Norton Internet Security if you have that or similar programs, it can stop you from visiting the site, and it would appear as if it were a timeout.

Hi,

Couldn't log in today, tried the 5 minute wait and it worked. What was that research about users going elsewhere if a web page didn't load in three seconds or less? They obviously didn't interview captive audiences :-)

Hmmm, well couldn't log in today and decided to try the cookie delete instead of waiting 5 mins. It worked straight away. So there *is* something going on with cookies as well as the 5 minute thing. I don't believe that coincidentally, every time I delete my cookies the timeout bug just happens to pass the 5 minute deadline.

Hey guys,

I've just pushed a new version of the site code live. As of now, all the time issues should be resolved; the servers are NTP synched (it looks like a small SNAFU resulted in the update process not getting run regularly - silly ISP!) and have much more robust timing code, too.

If you get a white screen/GG front page error, then let me know.

Meanwhile, there could be cookie issues going on, although I'm fine on IE and FireFox, but depending on your security problems you could be running into issues. If you find a repro case, let me know, and if you can identify exactly what cookie is making it break, I'd LOVE to hear about it.

Please keep on giving feedback, it's the only way TDN is going to become well and truly kick ass! :)

Thanks,
Ben
