Jeff is right. We suck creatively. Let's do something about it.

While I feel we have some very solid projects coming out of Garagegames, we are just climbing the long staircase of game design as opposed to free-climbing some jagged cliff.
I feel my project is very well-designed, and has some very unique features that are innovative and creative. I feel the same way about many of the other projects I've seen around.
So don't think I'm slamming anyone in particular with this post.
We have not tried to really go out on a limb and try to extend the boundaries of gaming or genres, and that's something we should be doing. You can't do high-risk titles in a standard company nowadays because of the cost. We've spent a small amount of money to get here, so let's enjoy the fact that if we fall on our faces we'll walk away unharmed.
I want to work on something truly innovative as a side project to the game I'm working on now. Something that makes people say "Whoa, that's different".
I propose Project Innovation
A game that is designed to shake things up, and really extend beyond a simple genre or formula. A game that epitomizes what indie gaming would be like in an ideal world, and something that when others see it they might be willing to take a larger risk themselves.
I have many ideas... but nothing set. Any genre, any theme, any format. I don't care, I just want to be a part of something that extends beyond "finishing" a product, and more into the realm of artistic masterpiece in terms of design.
Who's up for this? I am.
Post your opinions on such a project, but not the ideas for games. I'd like to see who is interested before brainstorming ideas, since there are so many ways this could head. Sticking to one idea now would only limit our creativity if this gets off the ground.

The 3/26/02 pic of the space game is the person's own engine, not a Torque game, interesting nonetheless.
Personally, I feel the FPS genre in total is about done-to-death.
However, that said, if done properly it can still be fun to play every now and then.
My Torque game is neither of what you mention, it is a console/arcade style of which I feel there are hardly any for the PC and I don't understand why (well, I do, but I fail to see the developer's reasonings).

Most PC games are twitch games that involve killing stuff... why not dump the twitch and/or the killing? Arcade games and puzzle/strategy games are no where near as developed on the PC as they are on the console.

Yeah, that's what the PC lacks. Games you can just sit down and play a game or two and walk away not stressing over how some guy sniped you or blew you up with a rocket launcher. Most PC games are twitch games that involve killing stuff... why not dump the twitch and/or the killing? A player registers and logs in, and then creates a soccer player for themselves by defining some basic stats such as height, weight, speed, skill etc.
Then they can start or join a game by selecting which position (of the available ones) to play in.
I think this is a great original idea, but it isn't something that I'm capable of doing. So if anyone wants to license my idea... :P

My suggestion is a multi-player soccer game. I think that would be do-able, and definitely cool.A player registers and logs in, and then creates a soccer player for themselves by defining some basic stats such as height, weight, speed, skill etc.

FWIW, the game project I'll be doing with Torque doesn't have any killing at all. The aim is that it's going to have a lot of different gametypes that you can just sort of jump in with. We'll see how it goes.

Grav looks very fun. Did you ever play the Quake II Kick mod? That's a blast.FWIW, the game project I'll be doing with Torque doesn't have any killing at all. The aim is that it's going to have a lot of different gametypes that you can just sort of jump in with. We'll see how it goes.

or
2) A team based paramilitary operations game
You're not original. I can name a hundred done to death games in these genres. Today WWII games are done to death as well. Especially since these types of games are basically mods, and the lone advantage Torque has for this is that the game can be free (which is why a good number of people are "holding out" for the Demo, and is also why I think the demo is a bad idea for GG). However, the space game whose dev snapshot was the POTD on 3/26/02 looks cool, and I've seen a pirate ship game that looks neat. I'm sure there are a ton of good games out there but if you're game falls into the category of "generic FPS" and your name is not "Carmack" you may want to rethink your idea.
