TSE Stability

Hey folks...I've been a TGE/TSE owner a while, but I am admittedly green when it comes to my knowledge of either platform. I have always hoped to get working on a small game project, and I'm wondering if TSE is stable enough today to be my platform of choice?
I understand TGE is already a commercial-quality platform and stable at that, but I would hate to start a project, get it going and then realize I have to spend months porting it to the TSE platform after the fact.
Will the continuous development going on in the TSE code repositories be likely to disrupt my game development (IE something works this week, but doesn't work when I update my TSE source and recompile)?
Also, can anyone speak on how much Ken Finney's books apply to the TSE? They appear to have been written with TGE in mind, and I'm curious as to just how similar the two platforms are.
Thanks for any assistance!
Ron
