Any FPS screenshots for Torque?

by Mark · in General Discussion · 12/11/2005 (6:24 pm) · 28 replies

I don't think I have seen a FPS screenshot yet made with the Torque engine... Could anybody link me or post some that I may have missed?
I'm thinking about getting a commercial licence, but I am concerned about what it may graphically look like using the game engine.

I mean a FPS where the gun is visible... I'm trying to start a game like GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, TimeSplitters... Objective based maps, gadgets and unlockables.

Have you tried the demo? you could easily achieve the gadjets and unlockables you want also.

I was going to say ... just try the demo ... press Tab to toggle first/third person ... if you're holding the crossbow you should be able to see it!

I have seen Tribes 2, but that game seems very old, and Torque seems to also have evolved much since then. i have seen Tribes Vengance however, does that game also run on Torque?

Nah. Tribes Vengance is known as the Tribes that is very "meh"-ish. It was made in Unreal, not Torque

I saw that one, looks amazing.. one of the reasons why I looked into Torque :)

You guys should bring your game on down to E3 in May, that's what I may be doing.. definately could turn some heads towards your game then :)

Fellow programmers,

I most heartingly agree that nowadys, graphics are what sell the game. But wouldn't you guys agree that screenshots and graphics are the responsiblity of the 3d modelers such as 3dMax, Lightwave, or maybe even TrueSpace.

Programs like Torque, 3d Gamestudio are responsible for the groundwork. the underlying code beneath the graphics, the instuctions that make everything move! Why would a simple look at a screenshot sell anyone on a particular 3d engine.

The same pictures shown above could just have easily been handled by 3d Gamestdio, Blitz3d, or even Aaargh! darkBASIC (Don't let my disgust at the language sway you from your own opinion though!)

I agree with Amanda Dearheart,

The artwork is quite good in the above screenshots but they do not offer any insight into the 'feel' of the engine. Personally i think Torque is horrible for fps type games, might be why any games actually released / published with it are puzzle / sport (etc) type games.

We started to make an fps with TGE but soon realised what an uphill battle we were facing, we are now making a far simpler more arcade type game with TGE & it's perfect for that type of application.

Our fps game has been ported to a more capable engine.

Before you post on how much you hate my opinion read this first:

-I'm not condemning the TGE, merely pointing out in my opinion it doesn't have the rendering capabilities or features for a MODERN fps style game.
-Yes it was used to make Tribes/Tribes 2 but that was 5 years ago, and besides alot of stuff from the Tribes2 engine wasn't carried across into TGE. Also the game wasn't hugely popular & was given away for free for a short period of time only 3 years after it's release. If you don't believe me here's the link
-Yes TSE looks bloody marvelous but it's not finished yet or anywhere near stable enough for my liking.

It seems the only people making any money off TGE are developers with a more realistic expectation of the engine. Like Rocket Bowl for example. Very simple game, not much to it, however it's extremely addictive and fun to play. Oh, and content packs. That's another way to cash in.

My point? If you use the engine for fun/education like we do make anything you want and have fun. If you wanna make money and publish a game fps is not the genre for TGE. TSE, when it's finished yes.

I think torque is simply not generic enough for people to see it as 'genre flexible'. Take one peek at a class like Player and you will see game specific code. At heart, its still a stripped down Tribes 2 engine thats been added to.

If you want a generic engine, remove everything below GameBase and get to work. Actualy, it'd probably be best to just remove GameBase, and just write your own(using ITickable, maybe).

I partly agree with Tim.

Though, It's alot of work, but it can be done. Look at LORE.

Thats not what Im talking about, if you go to the shapebase class right now you may see members related to energy, recharging, repair, cloaking, shield etc.. ALl im saying is that some of its components are not very generic. Then again, its not really lablled as a professional engine either, just a 'AAA' one.
