TGE Demo won't launch

by Norv Brooks · in Torque Game Engine · 12/10/2005 (6:21 pm) · 16 replies

I've downloaded the TGE Demo and installed, but when I try to launch it I get an error message. Consequently, I can't continue.
Here's the error message:
"Demo has caused an error in DEMO.EXE"
"Demo will now close."

"If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer."

Here's system info:
Operating System: Windows Me (4.90, Build 3000)
System Manufacturer: Gateway
System Model: E-4600
BIOS: Intel
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1500MHz
Memory: 640MB RAM
Page File: 81MB used, 1327MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Card name: Radeon SDR - Manufacturer: ATI Tech. - Enhanced (Primary)
Driver Name: ATI2DRAG.DRV
Driver Version: 4.12.0001.3056 (English)
Card name: RAGE IIC PCI (English) - Manufacturer: ATI Tech. - Enhanced (Secondary)
Driver Name: macxw4.drv
Driver Version: 4.11.0001.2474 (English)

I read in some 2003 forum postings about issues with DirectX9. Could this be the problem?
Norv
Thanks for any help.

It must be your OS version

It doesn't help that you seem to have two video systems. I'm not sure about the specs of the Radeon SDR, but the Rage II does not have enough VRAM to run TGE. Try disabling the secondary (onboard?) video system.

Apparatus - The Read Me under System Requirements list Windows ME as a valid OS. Why do you think the OS version is the issue?

Wysardry - I disabled the Rage IIc monitor and it didn't make any difference. I got the same error message.

Additional testing: I downloaded & installed the TGE Demo on my second system and it seems to launch & run fine. Here's the system info on the second system:

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
(2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519)
Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz
Memory: 254MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Card name: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
Display Memory: 96.0 MB
Driver Name: ialmrnt5.dll
Driver Version: 6.14.0010.3762 (English)

I'm wondering if the video card in my first system is the issue. It has 32MB of display memory which is suppose to enough. I could not find a later video driver for the Radeon SDR (9/19/2000) maybe that could be an issue.

Anyone any thoughts?
Thanks.

I have the same problem running TGE 1.4 on WinME. It appears to be caused by a lack of Unicode support for Win9x. One solution might be to compile TGE 1.4 with the Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Win9x. See the following link:

Is this where we are reporting 1.4 bugs for the demo?

my work machine freaks a bit on it too.

windowed mode is Busted. crazy polies everywhere.

but when in fullscreen it still doesnt like my input devices??

i have usb mouse and keyboard and sadly the keyboard is Actually a ps2 going thru a usb converter/splitter this seems to mess it up.
as the control object's just sit there and twitch.

for some reason the mouse doesnt work either.

and then in the user name screen trying to set name to "me"
it doesnt like the 2 character name and stays with "poser"

if anyone reads this and wants more info just post here and I can get the rest.

Dunsany - I've downloaded the unicows.dll & unicows.pdb, but I don't know where they should reside. When you say to compile TGE 1.4 with the Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Win9x, are you refering to the Full version or the Demo? I have the Demo & I don't see the source code to recompile? - Help!

That video card was designed to work with like DirectX 5 so... your lucky windows still works with it much less a modern 3d game engine.
Give it up and upgrade :)

At the Museum at Brooks. One time I was working on some project and found a big folder of women pilots.

They had then flying mail and other stuff during the big one... But most of the pics where from the airfield and
some of those laides where nuts. They also had female pilot dorm at Brooks.

Little known San Antonio history buried around...

Randy - At one time I was stationed at Lackland AFP and spent about 4 weeks at Kelly AFB, but was never at Brooks AFB. Thanks for the trivia.

Also, thank for the heads up on the video card.

Norv,

It seems a bit backwards to me but apparently Win9x can't be upgraded directly with the MSLU. It appears the TGE 1.4 Demo will have to be recompiled with the MSLU by someone with the TGE SDK.

I'm becoming a bit frustrated. I've upgraded my video card to a GeForce FX 5500 with 256 MB and AGP which is suppose to be compatible with DirectX9.0, but I'm still getting the same error when I try to launch the Demo. Anybody have any ideas what's happening?

I blame Microsoft for not providing a Unicode upgrade for WinMe on Microsoft Windows Update :p

We can't get it to work on a laptop with radeon 7600 integrated in it. Similar problems with a low spec Geforce 5 too.

I finally went one step further and upgraded the OS to Windows XP and it worked fine.
