TDN T2D Strategy Article (Coming Soon)

by Matthew Langley · in Torque Game Builder · 12/08/2005 (11:16 pm) · 15 replies

My latest plan goes over the TDN Article I'm working on for a Strategy game in T2D. I've been very pleased with the results and T2D his risen to the occasion quite nicely.

(figured I'd post a link to the plan vs. posting the images twice) NOTE: the plan has 18 images

I look forward to this! It's far removed from my projects, but it looks like it'd be interesting.

Nice! Can't wait, man! It's lookin' good. Um, what are the odds we could get a little .avi of your tutorial game running? :)

Aaaahhhh the attack of the miner boxes ;-)

Really like the idea of making a TDN article out of it ... didn't even think of making an RTS with T2D so far because I've too many other "funny and new" concepts that I want to prototype first :-)

But somewhen I will perhaps try to create an RTS like Dark Reign with more tactic than simple mouse speed "strategy" where this article might come very handy :-)

Hope you all enjoy it. Just finished with the first step on TDN, which involves creatinga Multi-layered Tile Map. Its a pretty simple step, though I tried to give a nice and simple introduction to the Tile Map Editor as well so some people might find it useful :) Working on the next step as we speak.

ADD: Also I recorded some videos of the little game at home, in the next couple nights I'll edit them into some acceptable videos to upload for people to check out. Some of the advanced features of the game I might not tutorial out since it takes so long and quite a bit of pictures and steps to describe even simple processes; however, I will still include the same base systems and guide people in the right direction towards expanding them. All the core will still be there though, multiple object selection, interactive gui, user interface, combat, mining, unit production, (possibly object queue object), and winning and losing conditions. I'm hoping to hijack some people for some animated art so I can get the proper animation calls (like moving, attacking, etc), which really is just a matter of plugging in a line here and there, so if anyone has any RTS usable art they would like to donate feel free to drop me an e-mail...

Feel free to give me input and suggestions as I expand the tutorial to help make it easier for people to pick up, especially since I'm still approaching the rest of it :)

(hopefully will have a good couple vids tonight)

Got a question for anyone following the progress of this tutorial... the mouse selection section is getting rather long, Right now about the first 2/3rds of it is categorized to be easily navigateable through the table of contents. Even so, once I finish with the headings for the parts I haven't given proper headings, as well as the part I'm finishing as we speak, the table of contents and the artice is going to be huge lol... any suggestions ?

Do you all like the way its set up, is the table of contents and the way I set it up good enough to easily resume where you left off and navigate it, or would it be more ideal for me to put the seperate sections of the step into a seperate TDN page and just refer to it on the main step page ? Any feedback or other suggestions would be extremely helpful :)

I'm thinking split it up into separate pages. It just seems like it would be easier to pick up where you left off if you happen to not do it all at once. Plus, it might be easier to grab specific sections if someone is only needing a certain part.

Then again, that adds clutter to the main page...

Thats what I was thinking... let me show more examples of what I'm imagining...

right now you can see the tutorial and all the steps... you click a step and t hen see a table of contents that you then can click to shortcut to a part of the step... so...

main page see all steps ---> step page see table of contents to shortcut to a section

If I were to divide it up more it would be like this

main page see all steps ---> step page see the section links (in mouse selections this would be three) and introductions ---> section page with link back to step page

The up side is just like you'r saying Adam, it would be easier for someone to continue where they left off, if you are just doing one section of a step you don't have to load all the text and images of the other sections of that step.

The bad part is it adds another level and another click to get to where you want and started. This might not seem that big of a deal, but the idea is to have the information very easy to access without a lot of digging.

I'm a bit biased in this decision so if anyone wants to chime in (feel free to add more advice Adam) then feel free to post what you think :)

Can you float the menu right or anything? Haven't dug too deep into the formatting on the wiki. You've got those little grey boxes on the right... if the intro text went around the TOC it wouldn't be so intrusive.

I think keeping things on a single page is a better idea, makes for faster reading, searching ahead, etc.
