XSI 5 Foundation User Feedback Request

by Scott Slauson · in General Discussion · 12/08/2005 (6:39 pm) · 38 replies

I'm looking to get my feet wet with Torque and I am curious how well XSI 5 Foundation fits within the production pipeline. 3DS MAX 8 looks to be the best overall choice for modeling and animation but unfortunately doesn't fit in my budget yet so I am searching for an inexpensive yet robust package. How well does XSI Foundation work with Torque and have you been screaming for particles, dynamics, cloth and hair? I guess I'm worried that I will quickly exceed the limits of Foundation so I am curious as to how well it has worked for Foundation users in this forum. LightWave is also on my "potential" list since they have massively reduced their price but their Interface is still stuck in the 90s so I'm not sure how counter-productive that would be. GameSpace is NOT on my "potential" list due to the level of user frustration that I have read, plus the Interface seems very odd (counter-productive).

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Scott

Any idea of how much the XSI exporter will cost once completed?

"I recommend XSI; it's worth developing from scratch the exporter for features and price tag. XSI 5 foundation has all the features of 4.2 Advanced."

That's very misleading. For instance, XSI Foundation does not have the FX Tree which is available in both Essentials and Advanved. It also does not include any of the crowd simulation software, fur and hair, syflex cloth, or rigid body dynamics.

That said, there shouldnt even be a debate between using XSI Foundation and 3dsmax. The price to feature ratio in XSI is unmatched, even excluding the features that I mentioned. At $500, Softimage is basically giving away their software. The modelling is incredibly robust, the integration with MentalRay is unparalleled, and the nonlinear animation engine leaves others in the dust. The only thing missing is an exporter for Torque ;)

...crowd simulation software, fur and hair, syflex cloth, or rigid body dynamics.

I doubt any TGE owner needs all that.

Polygon reduction is not included in the Foundation package, you'll need Essentials. Hopefully the exporter can auto build LOD's with Foundation but, even if LOD creation is a work around you still can't (imo) go wrong with Foundation's robust tool set.

Any news on the exporter?

I suspect you could export into something milkshape recognizes and export to Torque with that.

Any update on the XSI exporter? It's been almost a year now since it was in Beta and I am wondering if it is even still in development. :-(
