Welcome!

torque is not a gamemaker where you can pick up some pre-made art elements and use it in a game.

but, there are a lot of samples made by users with free characters, models, textures and more, that you can use for prototyping

I recomend you to post a "help wanted" thread to reclute artist that can help you in ypur game. If your game is a good idea, you can easly find some partners.

Wow. that's a pretty loaded question...

Let's see, first off, yes, within the Torque Game Engine, yuo will be provided with 2 "stock" characters you can use to get acquainted with the enigne. There's also a dune buggy for vehicles/ racing sims, as well as a number of "structures" that will allow you to play around with setting up levels.

If you want to extend your assets, something I'd strongly advise, you will indeeed need to acquire some software to create and export said assets into Torque.

For characters, vehicles, creatures, weapons, etc., you'll need a modeling application like Milkshape 3D, Gamespace/ Truespace, 3DS Max, Lightwave, Maya, or any of a number of freeware modelers out there.

That will allow you to create models, but getting them into the engine may require a particular program - like Milkshape 3D (there is an exporter cuirrently in development by a community member for Anim8or).

Additionally, you'll surely want to be able to skin those models, which will require 1) a program to map the models UVW coordinates (I suggest lithium UV) and 2) a decent 2D art package so you can paint those UV maps (GIMP is solid, and free).

For structures, buildings etc., you probably need to just go grab QUARK until constructor ships... or you could grab a commercial BSP editor... but for now, since you're obvisouly just starting, get QUARK.

In fact, go pick yourself up a copy of Ken Finney's book "3D Game Programming All In One". It is a great book for beginners and deals exclusively with Torque... PLUS it has much of what you'll need to at least get started already provided on the CD. (C;
