Remove the character borders?

I have created a character for my scrolling tile map, but my character has a border around him, is there any trick to mask the border to make it transparent so the box around this guy is not seen?

If you save it straight to PNG, you won't have such problems.

The border appears because of the color lose you have with JPG. (it interpolates between colors which makes them differ from the mask color)If you save it straight to PNG, you won't have such problems.

Or, because this is the age old problem that Melv is beautifully solving for us in 1.1 with significantly improved image maps and image acquisition. His latest plans calls out this problem and solution directly.

In this case, open the image with a painting programm and redraw the border and all parts till out to the "really masked" part manually again and resave it to PNG then.
I fear this problem is the price of the saved space you get with JPG and there is no automatic "work around" ...
