GG loading logo

by Dylan Jones · in Torque Game Engine · 11/19/2005 (8:01 pm) · 61 replies

I dont remember reading anywhere that the that main gg picture had to be one the to advertise the engine. I was wondering if I could change it so it would fit the style of my game, because the white background then all dark into the game is a pretty big contrast. I would like an employee to see if something like this;

www.imouse.hostultra.com/gg.jpg
is allowed? It still says the saying, and made with Torque. Does that little G have to be in it somewhee for me to be able to do this?

If this is not allowed then I wil keep the orginal logo.

ps. I thought I could do this because EA usually has different loading screen logos for different games.

Take care!

You do see the Blizzard logo change depending on the game, as well as the EA games logo (UT2003-2004), Even the Warner Bros logo changes to fit the mood of the movie.

What I'm saying is, in all of these examples, the logo is never altered beyond the point of recognition as far as the corporate identity is concerned, I imagine there are strict guidelines even within the companies as to what's allowed and what's not. But the logo is changed to make the whole game feel like a single polished product.

The logo Joseph posted in the post above with the snow on top looks cool, still very noticably Torque but with a touch of personalisation. If the game you want to write is mostly about winter or in a snowy environment, say a snowboarding game or arctic adventure.. then it would be appropriate and in with the feel of the game.

I don't think we're making too much of this really, it's another part of the artwork for the game and as such takes time to produce. People just want to know if it's worth their time making something which will add to the feel of their game. Something which still tells the end user that the game was produced using the Torque engine, the basic logo is present but has a hint of unique personalisation.

Otherwise, all Torque games will start off the same... This is the first thing the user sees of your game. this is your first impression people.

One thing I can say right now is that there will be a set of one or more (and plan on one, any more is serious gravy) that will be required as part of the Indie license.

If you think about it, the companies that are willing to modify their logo (and therefore dilute their branding) are making millions on the deals--it's worth it to them to spend the time and effort, as well as the brand dilution, for those deals.

And the second thing to keep in mind is that the logo is only required for the INDIE license...if you want to modify the provided logo, or not use any logo at all, then you have the very easy option of using Commercial licenses, and the problem is solved!

This "issue" seems to rear its head with cyclic frequency. But each time it is, I feel that people are putting the cart before the horse. If you have a game using Torque that is reaching a finished state, I'm sure GG would love to work with you on simplistic and rather insignificant issue. The first thing your customers will see is your installer, and hopefully it works (unlike Unreal tournament 2k4 or Civ 4's initial presses). It is when people worry about such things well before they have even a semi-functional prototype that creates a flood of "can I do this and that to your logo" questions for projects which will very often never reach a final state.

I can't wait for someone to release a game that has a changed logo to hear people rally around them, pointing fingers, and screaming "me too". And when asked how they got permission, they say "we had a solid product at the final stages of beta and asked for permission." Because I'm pretty sure that is what it would take.

It would be really cool if that one image had a black background =) I don't use white backgrounds for anything. Either way, this is hardly even an issue as the 'game' hasn't even started yet when the Torque logo is displayed. Use the next splash screen after it as well as the main menu to set the mood for your game. Just be glad you don't have to use that really long, ugly, Microsoft Games intro video in all your games =)

I have 3 splash screens that are displayed, 2 of them having black backgrounds. So I just want to use a TGE logo with a black background so they all transition nicely. As you all can see, my PhotoShop efforts didn't really go that smoothly, but I think it still looks cool(tho GG has the say wether it's OK or not). At any rate, my management overlords will take care of it for me, so I don't have to fret about it anymore. :)

Personally I think all we need is a official TGE logo that uses a white background and one that uses black. I don't see any reason why people think the TGE logo needs to fit in with their games theme. If you really are bothered about it standing out from your game get the commercial license and be gone with it.

That said, a third "animated" logo would also be kinda neat for those that don't mind bumping up the size of their game distro.

edit: I do like the Christmas logo :) Would be nice to see that used on games with a christmas theme :P

@Josh: Just start w/ the GG/TGE logo, fade to black, and keep everything else black. It's not like you're going WHITE, BLACK, WHITE, BLACK, YELLOW, etc...

@Stephen Zepp
Just make the logo on a transparent background, so it can be dropped on any color without editing it and pretty much anybody should be happy. It'd make it easier to make it part of a larger image as well (a shutdown splash screen that shows the logos for the various technologies used or some such).

I dont see what the big deal is. Is it embarassing to have the GG logo? I wouldnt think so. Is it that much of a hassle to use it, on an engine you pay 100$? Just think, the person who plays your game, sees the GG logo, comes to the web site, purchases any of the GG development tools is supporting the community. And further production happens. Or heck, pay for the commercial , like everyone has been saying. To me, not using the GG logo on a game you make, and sell, would be like me scraping the label off a pepsi can and selling it. Why modify the logo? To look "cool"? Loading screens don't make the game, the game play does. No hate, or being mean to anyone.. Just giving my two cents is all. Have a good day

If anything it should be a GG logo with URL?

Why? Because Torque is just one product. Pimp out the root and get more "plus" sales.

A "Plus Sale" method common to retail sales is to sale more and more add on's. Not just core products.

It should be

Then maybe Powerd by Torque etc..

Maybe if you could throw all 3 on one page. Game, GG and engine then leave that up a couple seconds.

Would be better than multiple windows.

A happy customer is a customer that spends more money. An irritated customer spends less.

Randy: Most people playing your game are not wanting to make a game themselves. The point of the "powered by Torque" screen is not to sell more people on Torque(well maybe a little), but rather to make sure they know that the game was made on Torque.

Ok just saying you could kill 2-3 bird with one stone. If the single image could do both.. tag and brag.

I think this is unbearable. was just going to purchase torque engine, and now the problem with logo. and you must display it for whole 4 damn sec. !
Fortunately there are other engines that do not require display their logo. Even Lithech (when offering their engine for free) did not required it. It is absolutely unacceptable. So long.

The decision should be easy for you: choose an engine that doesn't attack your hopelessly fragile sensibilities.

If your choice of engine is based on whether you need to show a logo or not, then it's pretty apparent that you do not have the skills to make a game :)

I am making games more than 5 years and do not f$$ck it on me! Yes the logo is a big problem because I am proffesional and can not afford to spent 4 sec. of users time displayng logos. But you can not understand it , I see.
On the other hand, the licensee required to pay money as well as "display a full screen, unmodified Torque Game Engine logo for no less than four full seconds in the start up sequence of any game created and "... "include in the "About" box or in the credits screen: (i) a link to www.garagegames.com, and (ii) the wording "This game powered by the Torque Game Engine."". In other words, I must pay money and promote torque engine!
Personally for me this is unacceptable. If it is acceptable for you, please continue. I just told my opinion.

If you don't like it, get the commercial license. No logo requirements there.

And don't make yourself look stupid by saying you're a professional and yet you did not bother reading the license before your purchase.

I did not brought it yet. And I wrote above post because I have read the licence.
As for commercial licence, must admit, I had not read it before Scott Burns replayed. hm, it is about $800. I think it may be acceptable.

Are you allowed to close the logo before 4 seconds, if the player clicks it? or press's escape?
I hope so..
you should be able to.

I despise that crap when you cannot close it, ea does it alot, sometimes you cannot get past thier logo screens.
I delete them from my game folder, and go with blank space.

I would not delete them, if they let me close them.
like I need to see the stupid logo everytime I start the game.
no crap you published the game, big deal.
