Alpha channel

I have a texture in Photoshop that has an alpha channel. It is a wooden fence so you can see through the gaps and around the top. However, when I apply the material in Max the alpha channel shows up as black when rendered. I know there maybe a problem with max in terms of this. So I then exported my DTS and checked it out in show tools and it still shows up as black. I have tried a couple different techniques and it either comes out as black or white.

Anyone have any ideas ?

Apply material to opacity channel in the materials' maps rollout, go into channel an make sure it is getting it information from the alpha channel not RGB ( the default)
