Tools?

by Alexander Gugau · in Torque Game Engine · 03/27/2001 (11:56 pm) · 9 replies

What tools do we need for level and model editing? I read something about a worldcraft converter, which version of worldcraft do we need? Is there another editor we can use? Is there a (cheaper) alternative to 3D Studio (Milkshape, Anim8or, Blender), we can use?

Thanks in advance
Alex

Milkshape 3D has a pretty complete SDK, and V12 will be in source code form, should be no problem making a plug-in.

The converter supports version 3.x of WorldCraft. There was a change in the file format between 2 and 3, and version 2 is no longer supported. The current tool set is WorldCraft, 3DMax and any bitmap editor that outputs png files. Support for other modeling tools, such as MilkShape and Blender, is high on the list and a number of people have volunteered to help make it happen.

There is actually a FAQ about MAX which states we currently support version 3.1
It should be easy to add support for 4.0 though, well have to take a look after the initial release.

ok i think i'm gonna go shoot myself in the head now, who thought having the latest software would be a bad thing. I hope someone gets R4 support soon after release

Are there some kind of licensing issues with WC ? QeRadiant has an EULA that explicitly forbids using it for commercial exploitation unless you license the engine. I notice that Sierra published HL, so maybe this allows using it to make games using V12 ?

thanks !

There wont be any problems with a max4 plugin, My team is using max4 and there will no doubt be a max4 plugin created by V12 users after its release.

I wouldnt it worry you too much..

Well MAX 4 is out of the reach of most indie developers. Unless you snab an illegal copy. So as an idie if you make a game and the user community starts making levels with Worldcraft, does ID/Valve come and say .. heya man you owe us some royalties.

Well, on the one hand, they're all in the Sierra family. :)

On the other hand, I see your point.

However, I think what they were worried about was something quite different -- the fact that Worldcraft is actually a state-of-the-art 3D engine. They're worried that people could script something -- or, more likely, create a plugin of some sort, since that information is available -- that would use Worldcraft as the game engine.

For instance, the buildings in Tribes 2 were done largely in Worldcraft, or at least Worldcraft was used at some point in the design process. (One of the level creators posted some development shots showing off his Worldcraft work on the buildings and such). And I'm fairly sure that they didn't pay Valve/Sierra any fees . . . maybe because they're in the Sierra family.

But if so, then we're ok. Because GG is part of Sierra's extended family.
