The DTS Plus SDK has an automatic LOD generator/decimator. The upcoming Max and XSI exporters from Dark Industries will both support this, so there will not be any extra setup required, just export settings to tweak. As far as I know there is no Maya version currently in the works, but at some point in the future I'm sure this functionality will come to Maya... just don't hold your breath. ;)

So, you still need to make all of the detail levels one-by-one, but that doesn't mean you have to actually create each detail level model anew.

I should add that Maya does have tools to help you reduce the polycount. Even the sort of "fire and forget" type, where the result is unpredictable and usually not the greatest. Maya does NOT have a tool like MultiRes which automatically makes all the detail levels you need. So, you still need to make all of the detail levels one-by-one, but that doesn't mean you have to actually create each detail level model anew.
