TSE Relief Mapping?
by Tim Betts · in Torque Game Engine Advanced · 11/02/2005 (10:37 am) · 156 replies
Hey shader junkies, so, we've had bump maps, normal maps, then parallax mapping, so what about the next challenge - relief mapping ? anyone even attempted to get this puppy working on TSE? Now I'm no shader programmer unfortunately, but it would look like that this approach (http://fabio.policarpo.nom.br/relief/index.htm) will yield far more accurate mapping than parallax mapping. Very exciting work. Any guru's willing to step up :) ?

Thanks for putting that out there. I thought I'd share a serendipitous effect I got with it. It's not what I wanted (I'm going to try to tone down the heightmap next), but I just thought it was pretty freaking cool just the same!
I'm trying to make the tile on the right here stand out a bit, and get nice and shiny:
You can see it has a nice bumpmap already. But my first shot on the parallax shader yielded the closest thing I've ever seen to a rendering of an LSD trip! I've just spent 20 minutes staring at it and thought I'd share this 12 meg avi:

Holy crap that is weird look can you post a pic of your height map?

Hmmm I destroyed it during my testing...oh wait it was just a straightup monochromized version of that wall image. Lotsa pure whites and pure blacks soooo it was pretty steep. I toned it down a bit and got results closer to what I was after, but in the end decided that this shader was not actually what I was looking for for this particular requirement. I'll darn sure keep it in mind, though, it's freaking cool.

Yeah but it was weir it was like there was a total disconnect between the raised sections and the lower sections.

Hi Matt,
are you still trying to have dynamic lighting working with ReliefMapping?
Take your time, only curious if it will get long time or you're near the solution :-)
Tnx for the good work! ;-)

Maybe you did see the post about 10-12 up where he said that it is working and there is a link to DL it.

Or am I wrong?
JoZ.

Yes but it seems to me that he said is for parallax and is still working on relief...Or am I wrong?

I don't have the time to port the relief shader. Look at the differences between parallaxP/V and parallaxLP/V for a reference.

What can I be doing wrong?

I have this problem where everything is extremely distorted and it looks like water.
What can I be doing wrong?

I'd say your height map is way too extreme--too many pure blacks and pure whites. Try lowering the contrast on it to more smooth greys.

Can you animate that ? That would make a great horror or shield effect on objects.

Wow, that could be really freaking cool if you could do it as a post process full screen effect!

BTW is that Doom 3 video near the top parallax or relief?

I see a reflection in there (the green thing top middle) so perhaps it would work without that little "extra" gimmick.

Are you sure you used relief?I see a reflection in there (the green thing top middle) so perhaps it would work without that little "extra" gimmick.
