I heard that the monsters were more of lab experiments gone astray then creatures from hell. Its understandable why they would do this but is it true?

I just got back. I liked it. Not the best video game movie, but its far from the worst!
If you loved the games, Mindless shooter with lil story, you will like the movie.

I bet .... there is a shader example in rendermonkey where you can take a chunk out of an elephant
with a shader.

So if you could program it to take out like portion of an interior object you could make BFG like weapon
dmg effect with TSE... in theory..

The BFG in this movie was awesome! Someone has to make a weapon like that for a game soon. I want it so bad. I will buy whatever game has this weapon just so I can play with it. Some modder out there is going to become a new legend for doing this weapon.

Why would they change the plot from Monsters from Hell to Science experiment gone bad?...
It's part of what makes Doom, DOOM!.. They may as well have called it something else then.. Who made that decision?
Bring them here, they need a kicking! Don't mess with the core concepts!

It's not out in the UK yet and I'll probably go to see it, but I lvoed the games and I know I'm gonna be so dissapointed.

@Jason, though the movie did get a different storyline, it sticks to the book fairly well, and I thought they did a good job of developing the storyline.

I just can't think of a single decent reason why they'd change the storyline... Oh well, that's Holywood.
Maybe they wanted to get more viewers by not alienating the Uber Christian "Harry potter is evil" brigade... but then, how would they know about Doom in the first place unless they played the game?...

I'll still go to see it though. More out of curiosity than anything else.

It was really pretty good imo. It was on the level of Resident Evil and AvP which were decent, enjoyable movies.

John Carmack approved the script.

One good reason they may have taken it away from the game a bit is so people who haven't played the game can still get it. Take Advent Children for example. Fantastic movie based on a game but if you haven't played FF7, understanding it is hopeless. By changing things around a little it makes things easier to appeal to anyone, not just Doom fans.

And honestly, I think demons from Hell would look kind of stupid in the Doom style. It was great in a video game were rules of reality don't exist, but thats harder to make work in a movie.

Yeah, I guess... but don't you think it makes the thing a lot shallower?.. I mean, fighting demons from Hell adds a level of menace to the proceedings, you're fighting something bigger than just the monsters, it's Good vs Evil... it's a struggle with impossible odds against forces from beyond our level of comprehension. Scientists and soldiers are possessed and mutated in front of your eyes and demonic visions shake your soul to its very core.

I don't kow about anyone else, but when I played Doom3, it was a lot more atmospheric BECAUSE I was fighting demons from Hell, because there was unknown forces against me with unimaginable power..

If it'd been a science experiment where it's marines vs the mutants, then it's a case of just kill the mutants and we can all go home for milk & cookies. But it's hell, a terrifying concept. In the game it was really well portrayed, The Hell levels were atmospheric and scary. I was glad to get back to the base to be honest.

The whole teleportation gateway to hell thing is something which has been done before so I would have thought that people would understand it (Event Horizon anyone?).. our clumsy science rips a hole in the fabric of reality into another dimension, a dimension of pure evil...

Now that's more scary than a bunch of mutants.

I thought it was funny that some of the characters were named after the creaters if Doom(the game)
"Dr.Carmack".
I actualy think the second Doom game was prety good for its time.

Oh and the BFG(Big Friendly Gun) :D or (Big ****ing Gun)
