Robin Hood

Hello There!
I was wondering what will people think about a RPG/Action game based on "Robin Hood"?
another thing I was asking myself, is what variation of "Robin Hood" is the best for such a game?

Can you provide with little more details, I can't imagine RPG Robin Hood but I am a programmer so that's could be the reason ;)

Steal from the rich, give to the poor?

Why not the other way around, I would play that (altought I am not rich) ;)

Feudal Tax Collector - The game where you steal from the poor to give to the rich, and leech a little off the top for yourself

A RH RPG could be interesting and fun. But just saying Robin Hood and RPG doesn't say much of anything. Instead, I started thinking of Grand Theft Sherwood Forest.

Realistic robin hood would be neat. (harder to do the models and textures though IMO)

maybe look at the new zelda that should be out soon (thats kinda what im thinking - or the old trailers when it looked 9 times better)

just had a thought:
if you were doing the traditional turn based fighting style for an rpg ->
say you've got dude mounted on a horse getting away from gaurds... you could keep it turn based, but have them moving on the horses while attacking (moving background ) ... kind of an in motion turn based...

just to add that little bit of extra action.

I just remember Robin hood running alot (maybe thats just me)

@Denis -
I was thinking about more an action game with a few RPG elements, like quests, inventory and skills. And I did'n think about adding the ability to play the rich and steal from the poor, and try to kill robin(could be fun, IF I make a Robin Hood game, I think I'll add this as well), thanks for the idea:)

@David Reynolds -
Yes, that is a main part

@Chris - nice Idea, think I'll use it(if I ever get there)

If I want to try and make the game, I will need the story, and I don't know which variation to choose :?

@ David Blake: "Grand Theft Sherwood Forest"... that's exactly where my head went.

I would go with the literary robin hood. Dark and serious with an unhappy ending. Maybe not as child-friendly as the 'Disneyfied' story, but the original Robin Hood story had one thing going for it over Disney's version...it didn't suck.

What about this recent game?

I 2nd dark and serious. Something like the thief games but not as stealth oriented. Also, (and i'm pretty tired just now so i may be miles wrong) i think there was an interesting connection between robin hood and the pagan antlered god cernunos. Anyone who ever seen the old robin of sherwood series with jason connery might remember the antlered god who only ever appeared in silhouette.

BTW. the "robin hood men in tights" approach would work as well :)

@John Coyne - what do you mean by a thief game that isn't stealth oriented?

@Rubes - Until now, I never heard of it... probbly didn't look enought... but I don't think that matters, since you can't trademark "Robin Hood", not after 700 years!!!

I don't think the game needs to be really "child friendly" but I don't know how to make "Robin Hood" really dark and serious, even though I do think it is a good idea to make it more serious.

does anyone know a specific version of "Robin Hood" that should be used for such a game?
and since I don't know what the "original Robin Hood" story is, because there are so many versions, I want to know if I should invent the story based on the versions I know, or if I should use a pre-made version?

thanks for helping me out and suggesting ideas!!!:)

@Lee-Orr Orbach

We should chat sometime about this game you want to make. I spent a year working on a Robin Hood mod for the Make Something Unreal Contest. You can see a house I built in a snapshot of the day here: www.garagegames.com/mg/snapshot/view.php?qid=795

We did so much research on Robin Hood and the medieval time period and you can have all of it. I just mentioned in another thread that I am dying to play a good Robin Hood game. I also suggest downloading the Robin Hood demo mentioned above. It is a strategy game and it is very very well made. I actually got a little help from those guys making my mod. I wish I could make a Robin Hood game with TSE but alas my path is headed in a different direction(that I am seriously excited about but not sure if it is prudent to mention yet). I would love to see you succeed with this game and I'll give you any thing I've got to give to help you. Just let me play it someday. :)

Look up the trademark for Messiah.

You might be surprised.

Actually, I think it may have expired by now, but it was fun while it lasted!

@David Blake - I didn't find anything about a trademark for Messiah. maybe I didn't serch for the right thing...

@Anton - that house looks really nice! I have been thinking of making a "Robin Hood" game for a few weeks now, but I still don't have any idea about how to make one : ( . I hope to even make something about this game, but I hardly have time, and I don't know alot about Torque. will really appreciate anything that will help me succed in making this game, so thanks alot!!! When/if I get to a stage when I need help - I will ask you as well.

A thief game thats less stealth oriented? Thats a damn good question hehe.

I was thinking of a game like the thief series by looking glass studios (see http://www.thief3.com/), but without the crouching in dark corners waiting for guards to move. More emphasis on archery than sword combat, and a slightly withdrawn anti hero. I'm just spitting out ideas here but say you have a section of the game where robin has to infiltrate a castle. Is the player going to charge in killing everything in sight, knock out a guard and steal his uniform, or scale the walls and leap over roof tops, and through windows. Maybe make all options open to the player?

Slighly off track, but i've been thinking it might be good to make a game recently where the player has a boomerang weapon and can hit targets one after the other in one throw, by pressing keys on the keypad which correspond to keys displayed above the enemies heads. Such a system might work with a bow as well, but instead of making it one arrow, make it the player fires arrows without any sort of reload time until he or she screws up the system by pressing a wrong key on the numpad, or waiting too long (so its like robin fires off 5 or 6 arrows without having to think too hard, or even point the mouse at the enemy).

BTW. heres the robin of sherwood series i was talking about before:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005Q3VG/qid=1129374211/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_11_3/202-3292602-4939852

I cant remember if the show was any good now, but i'm feeling nostalgic all of a sudden so i'll buy it anyway and let you know :)

@John Coyne -
thanks! I think I understand what you said about "less stealth" now, and I think the player should be able to choose what to do. and about that boomerang thing, thats a great idea!! maybe the player can have robin shoot two arrows at once or something of the sort!

thanks for the help,

Being able to choose what to do sounds good, lets the player get through the game any way they choose.
The bow control thing is sort of like a reaction tester (in my mind anyway, if you have a different interpretation then feel free to go with it :D) and i'm sure theres loads of things could be done with it, although it'd be good to get other opinions before knocking it out :)
BTW. Anton's offer of all that research sounds like a sweet deal :D

I like the version of Robin Hood where he steals from the political elite and give back to the tax serfs. But I am probably alone :)

As far as the archery idea goes, I would focus more on a more modern FPS sniper outlook with regards to that. I don't see Robin, realistically, firing of more than one arrow at once (although the movies would say otherwise, of course). From what I remember an English Longbowman could fire upwards of 6 shots in a ten second period, although not aimed - thats kind of a rapid fire (wikipedia disagrees with me on this issue, stating 12 a minute, but I'm sure it's in one of my history books somewhere at a faster pace). Aimed shots obviously take more time, but are more accurate. Using a breathing system (where the players breathing alters their aim) in addition to a "the longer you aim the smaller the crosshair" system (although not using a crosshair would be interesting!) sounds more realistic and entertaining.

@Aaron - maybe you'r right about two arrows at a time, I think I'll decide about that later. I will try to find out more about these things and I will try to make a good system for the archery.

thanks again everyone,
lee-orr

edit: I added after "two arrows at a time"
