New Online Mech-Style Combat Game
by Thomas Scott · in General Discussion · 09/30/2005 (2:17 pm) · 13 replies
Caeron 3000, the former MMORPG in development, returns with a new vision and a new website. No longer an MMORPG, C3K is now an online realtime combat game. The game features mech-like vehicles called Manned Assault Robots (MARs). The new structure of the game is guild friendly, and geared towards player customization and player hosting. The new website can be found at www.caeron3000.com.

A shame you didn't end up going with Torque, though best of luck all the same :)

So, with my newly acquired Torque License, we shall move forward with Caeron 3000. As soon as I can scrape up another $150, we'll be moving up to TSE.

Actually, we have just gone full-blown Torque. Our own game engine has taken a new direction and will no longer be sold as a complete development tool. We plan to sell the major components as independent add-on libraries for people who need them in an existing engine or game. So, with my newly acquired Torque License, we shall move forward with Caeron 3000. As soon as I can scrape up another $150, we'll be moving up to TSE.

As we were preparing to ramp up with the Torque engine, we discovered the Kaneva Game Platform. We've decided to use Kaneva and continue with our original vision of making Caeron 3000 an MMORPG.

Something about that kaneva engine just strikes me as though there is gonna be a catch with it down the line.. royalty wise or whatever..looked at it meself.. didnt like the fact everything had a price tag beside it even if most of em are at zero for the moment..

What catch? The royalty arrangement is clearly explained in their license agreement. And the royalties are a heck of a lot more than you would receive through a traditional publisher.

good luck

Wow I just looked over their faq. 50,000 for the license, and if you don't get enough people your paying out at least 200 a month out of pocket. I hope you have one hell of an idea that will draw in the people to pay actually make any money.good luck

Also, if you decide to cancel your game and not run it anymore, you are NOT obligated to pay the rest of the $50,000 license fee.

You are a bit mistaken about that. The $50,000 does not come out of pocket. Basically, you receive 20% royalties per month until the $50,000 is paid off. That alone is better royalties than you would normally get from a publisher. Then when the $50,000 is paid off, you get 50% royalties. If your game nets over $1,000,000 a month, you would get 70% royalties. Also, if you decide to cancel your game and not run it anymore, you are NOT obligated to pay the rest of the $50,000 license fee.

Sounds nice an all but chances of you earning $50,000 are slim, its just not common for indie games unless they are really kick ass an exceptional. As such IMHO the rates that they offer you aren't as great as they sound when compared to other electronic distribution methods that Indies use.

Interesting. You sound as if you know of other places that offer a full MMORPG game engine, hosting, billing, and support with no upfront costs. Please enlighten me. Can you name a few of them?

And having built an online mech game with TGE, I tend to agree ;)
Maybe we misunderstood your initial post?

Since you started this out with "Caeron 3000 is no longer an MMORPG" I think Logan probably means TGE still sounds like a better deal. And having built an online mech game with TGE, I tend to agree ;)

You didn't read the whole thread because I came back and stated the following:"As we were preparing to ramp up with the Torque engine, we discovered the Kaneva Game Platform. We've decided to use Kaneva and continue with our original vision of making Caeron 3000 an MMORPG."
