Sounds like your in edit mode, change to object mode. its a pull down below the window your object is in.

Are you sure you have all vertices selected. Make sure you have limit selection to visible de selected. In edit mode his is the second from right under your 3d window (looks like a box) hver over it if unsure.

If you're planning on exporting to Torque, make sure you do your scales in edit mode, not object mode, otherwise it screws up the nodes (if you need to mount or animate things). But, like James said, make sure you you have all of the vertices selected (or faces or lines or whatever mode you're in).

Sounds like your first model, then :p

Honestly, I cracked the nut by doing the complete Gus tutorial... there's just way too many shortcut keys to learn to be any good right off the bat.

Start with Chapter 3 and proceed on to Chapter 4.... even if you've already read it once, I highly recommend doing it again if you're having problems with the interface. Apologies if this sounds harsh; I'm not trying to look down my nose at you or anything. I was there where you sit, frustrated at not knowing the interface and I couldn't get anything done... I'd glanced over the manual and figured I'd learn it as I went, but really it was pretty much impossible. Trust me, go through at least Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, take a couple of notes, write down a few keyboard shortcuts and you'll be a pro in no-time.

Or, this is pretty much the same documentation, except I think it walks you through even further.

If you have two monitors or two computers, that works best... documentation on one screen, Blender on the other. If not, maybe print the documentation out and work that way. Flipping back and forth between the documentation and is pretty worthless. Or... I really recommend buying the book if it's in your budget. Well worth it, and it supports the Blender Foundation.

Open blender,

press 'TAB' to toggle object/edit mode.

it will tell you under the window which mode you are in. click the button with a hand (you dont need this to start with)

click the button with the square box (limit selection to visible)

then press 'B' and drag the box around all vertices that you want to manipulate,

press 'S' to scale
press 'R' to rotate
press 'G' to grab (and move)

play around with it and don't give up. It will be worthit in the end.
