Projectile Particle Emitter Timing

Hey, everyone...
I've looked at the settings for particle emitter and for the particles themselves and cannot seem to find the answer I am looking for.
I am using the projectile and particle definitions for the fire staff in Realm Wars, but I have them coming from a different weapon. My problem is that sometimes the particle trail displays as soon as the weapon is fired and sometimes it does not display until the projectile is well away from the firing point (halfway to the target or so). I would like for the particle trail to always start at the same position relative to the firing point, but cannot seem to find how to enforce this.
Anyone have an answer for this?
