Autistic Kid needs Xbox

by Chris · in General Discussion · 09/08/2005 (12:12 am) · 41 replies

Hi.

A few weeks, I saw someone mention in a post about them taking up a collection for a local kid with autism, to get him an Xbox. I was curious if you raised enough money, and if not, I'd like to send you my spare for him. Its not new, but it works like a charm.

I don't remember who made the post, so I'm sorry for making a whole new thread about it. If you made the post, or know who did, please let me know.

Thanks.

It was me! His name is Mikey. Dude! Holy... wow. Yeah. I'll tell you how to get it to him. I work at the EBGames store at a mall in Seattle, WA. He's been coming to the store for 7 years and knows every game and nobody has ever given him a console to play games with.

I've raised some money between my wife and I and customers but not enough. Not close really. Only $35. But that will get him some used games!

He really is the coolest guy and so deserving of a game console if you ever met anyone. In only 3-4 weeks of working at the EBGames store we've become fast friends. If I had my own xbox to give him I would have already.

I actually pulled aside both an xbox and nintendo rep and talked to them about him when they came into our store. They both offered to help out. I haven't heard anything since then.

So if you give him your old xbox that would be awesome!

You are the coolest man!

I'll tell you. My next goal for this guy is the get thru to a game company and get them to hire him as a game tester or something. He wants a job doing anything with games so bad. He would be perfect for the job.

He may not be street smart but he knows his games. I call him miklopedia sometimes and ask him if we have a game in the store or whether a certain game is any good.

Dude. You are going to make his year.

I'll get you my contact info after you have seen my post here and reply.

I tell you. If I ever have my own company. You know. If I win the lottery or something. I am hiring him myself. :)

Thanks again man! You're the best!

Seattle huh? If you're willing, I can grab some games at the Microsoft company store (I'll voluntter to purchase 2 for him). The games there are Microsoft published games but there are some good ones (Halo2, Fable, Forza, etc...). Since you're so close, it would make more sense to meet up with you instead of shipping. Heck, bring the kid to Redmond and he can play the XBox in the MS Visitor Center. Email me: maschmid at microsoft dot com

It's awesome to see this kinda thing happening. My kids X-Box crapped out a couple months ago and we still have the games if he's interested, I'd be glad to send them. They are mostly kids titles though:

Crash Nitro Cart
Sonic Heroes
Sonic Mega Collection Plus
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
Star Wars Clone Wars/Tetris Worlds......this is the one that came with the console.
Namco Museums....Galaga, Dig Dug, Pole Position, Galaxian, Pac Man and Ms. Pac Man

If you think he'd like these lemme know and I'll send 'em.

Holy Smokes! You guys! You're all going to make me... i mean my wife cry being so generous. You guys really are the greatest. I stopped into the store for my paycheck and told him that he's getting an xbox. You should have seen his face. My boss was all excited. Even the customer in line was like "You're finally getting an xbox, Mickey! Alright!" cause EVERYBODY knows him. It was pretty cool. I just told him that someone I know is giving away their xbox so he doesn't think it's just charity. My wife and I are giving him our tv. He doesn't even have a tv. We got our computer and we never watch tv anyway. You guys... this IS why I am apart of this community. Cause THIS is what this community is about. Good for us. This is something to be proud about when we set ourselves apart from a cold hearted corporate industry. Caring is what makes and indie and indie to me. Caring about games. Caring about customers. Caring about each other.

I gotta go to work now, but tonight I'll get together whatever we need to get this stuff to him. Thanks so much everyone. See. You're making my wife cry. :P

Hey Anton, what kind of games does he like? I've got a bunch of xbox games I don't play anymore. If I have few he might like, I'd send em your way. (It would be coming from the east coast, but I work at a shipping company, thats no prob). If you want, send me an email at my public email in my profile. I also have a few xbox live sub cards if he has internet access.

If you could post some of the games he likes and maybe some of us have them... I know I have a few games I never play anyways, so if I have some that he likes I'd definately be willing to send them.

Sounds like he's pretty high-functioning for an autistic person. The fact that he comes around the mall and makes conversation with you is pretty advanced...

But having a console would certainly give him something to do. It also sounds like he would benefit from more social interaction too once he gets the XBOX. The world of games is nice but the world of real humans will also help him to open up more and grow.

Just my 2cents. Very impressive what GG community has done for him but not surprising. The GG community is an exceptional group of people.

Advanced, yeah right, a woman who has something similar to autism (something in her brain is all messed up) who cant add 2+4 can remember and sing thousands of song in I think 5 different languages, even challenged people can do some things eceptionaly well.
