Using DIF for structures

Hello,
First off, I'm an artist on the team. I bought the rts pack, so that's why I'm asking the questions and not our programmer. Anyways, I have asked our programer if I can use dif over dts for our structures since they have benifits (I think) will fit our game well. So I'm researching here to find out if it's possible to build dif structures in layers. What I mean by this is to find out if I can use 1 dif per story, and then combine them into a complete structure. Then if you want to see inside, you 'hide' the upper stories to reveal the story underneath. Not so much placing / removing on the fly, as not render/not rendering on the fly. They'll always be there, I just want a way to make certain parts hidden. We would love to make it possible to go inside strcutures, but if there's no way of making the roofing transparent, there's really no point in allowing units inside. This is what our programmer can do we just need to know if DIF's are going to be the wrong route to go? Thanks for any thoughts.
